Sub recommendation for this set up?

Hi, I'm looking for a sub to pair with a Pioneer Elite VSX-42 with a set of the Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers. It's a fairly large, open floor plan, room (24x20) but the listening area is only about 12x20. 80% movies/games - 20% music. My budget is around $500 (can go a little higher if the performance gain is significant) and prefer if Best Buy carries it as I can get pretty good discounts there.

Let me know what you guys would get.

Thanks!

Thanks guys.. I'll look into those. Any recommendations from Best Buy as I get over 50% off on some of them.

Two questions: are you looking at the $500-$600 price point before, or after, discount? and what is your ceiling height? Open plans sometimes also have high ceilings...

After discount - so it can go up near $1000 (maybe a little higher) if it is from Best Buy (as long as it outperforms the ones listed above). Ceiling is only about 9-10ft.

Good,Good, no cathedral ceiling or something like that! That'd really kill you. Still a fairly sizable space, so I'd prioritize output. The Outlaw LFM-1 EX, at $599 w/shipping included, is *probably* the output king of all the subs listed. I'm not super familiar with the Best Buy options but my quick judgment looking at the BB website is you'd have to go above, possibly well above, the $1200 price point to exceed the performance of the Outlaw or Hsu or Rythmik subs. It's actually kind of shocking how much better of a deal these Internet Direct subs are. Sticking below $500 (if just barely) the SVS P-1000 or the Dual EMP 1010is on sale seem closer to what you can get for $1000-1200 at BB. True He-man Audioholics might find those options lacking in a large-ish room for movies, but most normal people would probably be pretty happy.

Don't fall victim to the thought process that high cost equals quality and deep discount on high cost creates good cost to value.

In the $500-1000 range, Best Buy has tons of subs and none of them are worth advertised retail price. Some retailing at $1000, example Martin Logan Dynamo 1000, will not come close to the performance of the Hsu, Rythmik or SVS options at half the price.

Some of the passive PA subs at BB would be a tremendous value at the discounted prices available to you. For example, JBL JRX118S listed at $550 when combined with a Behringer NU1000DSP listed at $300 will crush anything under $1000 in the home theater segment. Additional considerations like, outboard amp and bass management having to be configured (for the JRX118S, JBL recommend HPF at 30Hz with slope 24dB/octave and LPF between 80-100Hz with slope 12dB/octave), means a more involved setup with additional calibration steps. Alternately, this could be a tremendous learning experience. You'll understand the jibber jabber in the parenthesis :D.

wow, definitely would have fell victim to the "thought process that high cost equals quality and deep discount on high cost creates good cost to value. " so I'm glad I came here for help first!

I'll probably go with the Outlaw since the passive sub seems as though it would require much more than I think I can understand.

Thanks again guys!

The Outlaw at $599 shipped your best bet IMO as that's a good size room so output is key.
