Sub recommendation for HT - Velodyne?

Just purchased 4 Monitor Audio Radius 90 bookshelf speakers, and a Radius 180 as a center speaker, connected to a Yamaha RXV1500. As you can see, I like the sound of Monitor Audio, as far as small speakers are concerned. However, the sub that fits this category (the Radius 360) sounds very uncontrolled on the lower frequencies.

Somone suggested the Velodyne Minivee sub. It looks tiny, so not sure how much boom will come out of it. Is there anyone out there who has used it and has any tips/opinions on it? If not the minivee, any other recommendations for a sub in the $600/$700 price range which will carry a great deal of punch for watching movies, yet be controlled enough to listen to lower frequency subtleties when listening to audio CDs? My room is quite small 10X15, so anything that would work for that would be great.

mini vee = spl 800 series 2

its the same sub as the spl series 2. I have heard it, and its a loud 8inch subwoofer. How big is your room, and how low do you want to go?

Bottom line, just want the ground to shake when the spaceship lifts off in the movie and also want to hear base nuances when listening to CDs. If you have any other suggestions in the $600/700 price range for subs, by all means, most appreciated!!

It seems you are attracted to tiny. This may not be in your best interests.

Check out offerings from SVS or Hsu has. Perhaps not tiny but this is one case where size does matter somewhat.

That's a pretty small room. Id go with the SVS PB10-ISD this sub goes really low and is perfect for movies.

I like the SVS PB10ISD for the size of his room, and for HT, but for those bass nuances and audio CD's, I think he may miss out. That's a nice budget. I don't know what the street price is on the Def Tech Super Cubes, but they would fit in well in that size room. You can't have punch with a sub that goes down to 17Hz. There's a big difference between a HT sub and a musical sub. The 8" Super Cube will sound great with music and HT, but won't shake the foundation like a SVS PB12 Plus or Ultra.

Within your budget, you might also want to look at one of the SVS tube subs...25-31 series. They take up little space (16" floor area) but are a pretty good bang for the buck. IIRC, the 25-31 can also be ordered configured to 20 or 22 if you desire.

I'll second that! But about the depth...I bottomed out my Avia disk at 20hz with my STF-3. I'll get a meter on it today, but to my ears, it didn't lose too much between 25 and 20hz. And it is said that the Hsu is a bit more musical. All that said, you can't go wrong with either SVS or Hsu. And Buckeyefan is correct. Your room size wants a great 8" or a decent 10" sub for for maximum HT/music enjoyment. Your budget will get you what you want, for certain.

One design detail you may want to look/listen for....down-firing versus front-firing. Personally, I find the front-firing subs to be more directional (you know where they are) as opposed to surrounding you with bass, and have less of a foundation shaking ability.

How would the velodyne spl800II or spl1000II compare to the Def Tech supercubeII? I can get the supercube for cost+ 10% but I think it's a little more expensive to begin with.

when i compared the velodyne 12 to the super cube II, i tried them side by side, and i enjoyed the cube 11 more. it had a smoother bass, and also gives a hard bass. i am glad i purchased the super cube II.

I've not heard them side by side. I'm really impressed with Velodyne (so is SVS). But I was amazed with the sound quality of the tiny Super Cube 8". Cost plus 10% is a steal. I'd recommend the Super Cube 10" if the deal still stands.

Thanks everyone for all your comments! It really seems to me that at the $600/$700 subwoofer price range, bass control vs volume becomes an issue where you may have to compromise a bit on one or the other... I wonder if anyone has any opinion on this?

I work in sales of the audio world and after working with various products, in the 600-700 range i would certainly choose a supercube2. The eight is really tight and provides excellent punch but the two passive 8 woofers add low frequency without compromising the sealed equation that adds to accuracy. I have chose to purchase the SuperCube I once i can drum up the $$$ for it.
