For the set up below should I buy a sub or surrounds first.

Sub baby....

which kind are you looking at...

You could get by with any inexpensive set of surrounds for temps...

Get a monster sub... I know you've been lingering for awhile, so Im sure you have a sub in mind.. Im thinkin a SVS plus but Im kinda Biased cause my first real sub is a Plus/2... one the single greatest editions to my HT ever... :)

If your mains are reasonably full range (down to 30-40 Hz or thereabouts), you can add a sub later and implement the multichannel function so you can listen to 5.1 movies right away. Subs definitely add an important element to the system, but if you want to listen to multichannel audio, you need at least two surround speakers to do that. Let your audio priorities be your guide-go with whichever aspect is most important to you at this time.

If you have any spare speakers at all, use those as surrounds temporarily, and get a sub!

What is the budget?

I would add the sub first. For me, a sub would add more enjoyment to movies and music than surrounds.

I ordered the killer sub as my first real upgrade even though the rest of my current system is hardly worth a mention.

the sub is the most impressive (most noticeable) upgrade you can make ... even for your visitors.

If movies are your primary application - without hesitation, the sub. Get some cheapo surround if you must have them, but splurge on the sub.

In my system the sub was the largest impact to the experience, right after upgrading from a 27" to a 92"!!

Gotta go with the tide on this one.....go with the sub. I've got my old junk HTIB surrounds still in place and they more than fit the bill for the moment. My mains are pretty stout, but the sub added way more to the movie experience than the surrounds ever will! :D

Sub, sub, sub...all the difference in the world! Just buy some $20 speakers for the surround for now; they will be just fine until you can afford to upgrade them.

Go for a good sub now...

...Get the sub. I upgraded all my speakers first and while they made a noticeable difference, it wasn't as dramatic as when I upgraded my crappy old 8" Jensen HTIB sub to a well made 12" sub. All I can say is it added a huge, "WOW!" factor to my system while watching movies.

Like many have said so far. Go with the sub over the surrounds. It will have the biggest impact on your system, and your viewing/listening enjoyment. It will also open up your mains speakers and they will sound different (better).

:D :D :D

I forgot I asked this of all you. Thanks for the replies. In fact I decided to go with the sub but labored over the desison for a couple of days. Really the choice was whether or not to spend a little or spend spend spend a lot.

I just ordered the SVS SB-12-Plus-Piano. I live in an apartment and the neighbors already fear me. :) after reading a lot of reviews and listening to many subs this weekend, I am content.

Thanks again

I started with a 5.1 system : m60s, qs8, vp100, and an old B&W 12" sub with rather poor 35Hz extension.

This system sounded great and I loved it. I watched movies frequently and started listening to music again.

6 months later I added a SVS PB-12 and now I can't stop. Every night I pop in a new disc to see what this thing can do! No question the sub put a smile on my face more than the entire set of speakers. Major grin factor  :D :D :D
