Hey there, new member just starting purchasing my surround sound. My question is I need a sub that is not over powering my speakers. My brother gave me his receiver, is a DENON AVR-3808CI, and my speakers are the KLIPSCH RSX-5, with the RVX-42 LCR center, so all I need is the sub. So if some one can recommend one I will appreciate it thanks.

Buy a good sub but don't turn it up real high. By ear if necessary, or by measurement with a Radio Shack DB meter and a test disk, diddle with the sub's level control and the cross over so that your sub sings out at the same loudness as other higher frequencies. Unless you're really into pounding bass, the effect of a sub should not be real conspicuous. It should be a continum of your main speakers.

The idea that you can overpower speakers with a sub is really a myth. You should ALWAYS calibrate the level with an SPL meter. Borrow one if you need to, or at the very very minimum listen to material you've heard on a good system so you can judge how loud the bass should be.

The only thing that's possible is that you'd pay for headroom in the sub that you're not going to use (i.e. it can play louder than you'd ever need it to) which when you're on a budget isn't that good, but it won't make for a bad sounding system once it's dialed in correctly either.

Now that all said, what sub you should get depends on how loud you prefer to listen, what's your budget range, and how big is the room?

anything under 700, my room size is pretty small is 9'x10.5', so i was thinking maybe a 10". The location for the sub is 31" deep x18" wide x 25" height.

Are you looking for a sub music or movies or both. For movies, a 12" or 15" will rock. The low frequency will rattle you better then with a 10". Good Luck.

About 80% movies, 15% gaming, 5% or less music.

The SVS PB10-NSD and the Hsu VTF-2 MK3 are 2 for your consideration. They're probably more that you need for your room, but over the next 10 to 15 years you might be in a larger space.
