I'm new to this forum. I am looking to purchase a subwoofer, front, and center channel speakers to use for movies and music. I have a budget of under $1000. The system will go in a 15 x 21 x 9 foot cieling fully open to the dining room. I would like to incorperate the existing Definitive speakers already in the cieling for my rear speakers. I started looking at some subs and have no clue what to use for the fronts and centers. Here are the Subs I was looking at: "Yamaha YST-SW315" 250w, "JBL E250P" 250w, "Velodyne DLS4000R" 200w, "Klipsch Sub 12" 300w, Which of these subs would be the best pick, and is there another that would be better at the $300-400 range? Also, could you give a few ideas for the fronts and center. I checked out the Klipsch C-2 and F-3 at Best Buy for starters. Thanks!:) http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Don't even waste your time considering Yamaha and JBL; in the price range, their subs are average at best. I haven't heard that particular Velo, but I would choose it over the others still. Klipsch will probably be OK.

If you can push your budget a little, I'd seriously be looking at the SVS PB-10NSD at $429, it is one heck of a sub and should be sufficient for that room. You might also look at the HSU Research STF-2.

Welcome to the forum.

I have a Yammy SW315, and think it does a good job. OK, it's not a top-notch sub, but I don't regret getting one, especially since I paid only $185 for it (plus $30 shipping):

It has a decent frequency range, more than enough power for our 14' x 18' room (which is open to another room), and a small footprint. You can read more about it in this Yamaha YST-SW315 thread (see post #6, especially):

of those the Velodyne would be the best, then the Yamaha.
I have a YST-SW315, it's not enough sub for my 8,000 cubic foot room (as to be expected, and yes, replacements are being pondered), for the $200 I paid it's a fairly good subwoofer, and I think it would do quite well in a smaller room (like your 3,000 cubic foot room jwlw68 ;) ).

yes. a Dayton TITANIC 10" comes to mind. as dose a Hsu STF-2, or two of these.

A lot of great responses, pony up a few more and go with this and cease all doubts

For $429 plus shipping you just really can't beat the PB-10NSD from SVS. Just a little looking around at the reviews (both professional and consumer) and it goes without being said. I have the DLS-3750R from Velodyne (the little brother to the one you mention) and to be honest it is a good sub, but had I a choice I would go with the SVS without hesitation. I know it is a little bit higher than what you mention but not by much and you simply can't go wrong. As far as the L-C-R speakers go that is a whole separate ball game. The best advice is go out and listen to as many different speakers as you can from as many manufacturers as you can. Narrow it down by what sounds best to you. Pay attention to what they are hooked up to and where (how the room is designed) they are and see what seems to give you the best felling of what sounds "Right" to you. All of us like a little different things. Some people love Klipsch, some people hate them, as a lot of people think that they are too bright and edgy in the treble area due to their "Horn Loaded" tweeter. I have one for my center only in my bedroom so I can hear the dialog clearly when the volume is still low. Sorry rambling here. But really, go out and listen to as much as you can. Don't be afraid to listen a little above what you want to spend. Sometimes that extra little bit of dough will take you to another level entirely. Good Luck!
