Sub amp, on sherwood.

So i got a sherwood rx-4109 for free, and some large speakers for free, what feels like a decade ago. I've used them pretty much everyday for my computer.. anyway,
....the one speaker and a cat i was pet sitting for... it's worse than you're thinking...
so i bought some new speakers, which aren't here yet, but I've been thinking a lot about adding a passive stand alone sub. From the reading I've been doing, I'm thinking i need a stand alone mono amp which connects to the pre-outs.. however i don't have those, what i do have is aux in and out, tape in and out.. can i use one of those outs, to the amp and then to the sub? I only ever use the one output anyway due to my computer. I apologize if this has been asked 100s of times, but i don't know the correct terminology to properly search, or im just doing something way wrong lol. Ty in advance.

The aux outs are probably a better candidate than the tape out, you need something that the volume control works with; a tape out may only be a fixed line level out (altho some old 2ch stuff had a monitor circuit that could work). The chances are you'll do better with a single powered sub as far as cost goes....what gear do you have in mind?

The reason i was going passive sub was because i like to build things, and planned to build a box. But i have a sundown u-12 4ohm sub i can get for next to nothing. I am aware it's over kill, but i believe i have 3 or 4 mtx terminators in storage. I don't know how i get this stuff lol. Anyway, was just going to build a slightly oversized ported box. The amp i was looking at is a fosi audio m03 from amazon, 100w. the mtx max out at 200.

DIY works fine, too (my last several subs have been such). Generally if buying drivers and amps I'd still build two subs and drive from a pro amp for best economy/performance. Might want to model your sub for best box volume with something like winisd or bass box pro....

Ty, and i forgot to say ty for the above. I appreciate it very much! I mostly use my system for gaming or when I'm sleeping in my chair. My computer desk has a full recliner lol. I spend way too much time in that chair lol. Thanks again!

I have 4 subs in the house (only one per audio system) and the best one by a long margin is my home brew 15" that is in my home theater. The sub's driver has a huge rubber surround which makes it very compliant and happy dealing with low bass. By using it in a sealed enclosure that compliance is under control. I use a 300 watt plate amp to power it. It is cleanly awesome. It is pretty flat from the crossover frequency to 28 hz where it starts heading down hill down to 20 hz where it is 15 db down. It cost me $425 to build. If you have some tools and time it is something to consider.
