Steve Wilson (of Porcupine Tree) is set to release ‘Grace For Drowning’ on September 27th, 2011. This album represents a milestone in audio fidelity as the first-ever new rock album released primarily as a Blu-Ray video disc, with high definition music in 5.1 surround sound and accompanying video content for every song. The video content includes music videos starring Wilson (he’s only appeared in two previous music videos) as well as excerpts from the recording, mixing, and mastering sessions, presented in interactive formats that bring fans closer than ever to the production process. If you are a fan of progressive rock or genuinely good music in general, you owe it to yourself to pick up "Grace for Drowning" in any of the formats it will be offered in.

I almost ordered the Limited Edition set but it was $80! Includes the BD and CD plus bonus tracks, but I decided to just get the CD and BD.

I went to order this on blu-ray (on burningshed) and it is already out of stock! You've got to be kidding me! I just found out today that this was even released. Probably going to see Wilson at Ram's Head in November if the ex will watch my son. Well, at least I have the Pink Floyd Dark Side Immersion set to occupy my time for the next several weeks................

The long awaited collaboration between Mikael Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) is finally being completed. This album is really more mellow than I expected, even having heard the prerelease samples. It is sort of the opposite of The Incident which has quiet moments interspersed with heavy stuff. This one has moments where it explodes, but for the most part it is very calm. It has some light jazz feel at times, chill-trance at times, movie score on other tracks. It has hints of Wilson's other recent work, but much of it has a very different sound than I have heard from him.

It has a very late 60s early 70s progressive rock feel to it with heavy influences from Jethro Tull, King Crimson and Jazz like you mentioned. I love his reliance on having a well accomplished pianist playing in the background while layering keyboards and other instruments. Give it time, it will grow on you.

The Incident from PT had to grow on me too, but after just a week or so of listening to it I already loved it. This one is a little more unexpected, but I really do enjoy it already and I am sure it will continue to grow on me I am still just listening to the CDs. I hope to make time to sit down this weekend and give the Blu-ray a complete listen.

I just got the Grace for Drowning Blu-Ray from Amazon. $16 or so shipped. Really like it so far. I'm confused though because the back of the package says it includes 6 demos and 5 films. How do I access these? I've found the extra two songs and options for surround or stereo but nothing else. Thanks!

The demos and films are only included in the Limited Edition.

As always, Steve's 5.1 mixes on this disc are excellent. It has great separation and placement of small cues in the surrounds is nicely done. Like The Incident, it seems it was intended for or first mixed for multichannel, since there are layers that are more obvious in the 5.1 mix. I have listened through a few times but haven't cranked it yet.

I had the same question. It took me a while, but I figured it out.

There isn't a separate bonus content section in the menu.

From the main menu select songs or tracks (whichever it is). This will give you a list of the songs. When you select a song that has accompanying video or pictures, a second menu will appear. From there you can choose to view the video, pictures, or lyrics along with the song.

When you select a song that doesn't have any extra content it will just play the song. So you'll have to go back and forth a few times until you figure out which ones have the content.

Glad I wasn't the only one who had trouble with this!

They've done that on all of their DVDs and even on some of the DVD-As. I hadn't poked around this one yet. In the Limited Edition, the demos are included on an additional CD and there are additional films apparently.

This album has really grown on me. This one has enough of a different feel to it, that it actually took quite a bit of listening to get to the point where I can honestly say I REALLY enjoy it. That is not to say I had to force myself to listen, but I had to be in a mindset to take it in. That's different from much of Wilson's work, particularly PT, the vast majority of which I liked either on the first listen or within a listen or two. This album takes some time to digest and required re-listening a number of times for it all to gel together. It is put together like some of the older PT work, with the rises and falls and a theme of sorts (Voyage 34?) It is probably best taken in as a whole rather than in chunks as well.

agreed, recording quality is top notch too. Steve has done a fabulous job combining the best of progressive rock in the 70s while also adding his own flare to it. But don't put this disc on if you're looking to cheer up a dull day
