Amps are not all that expensive, but as pointed out his sub isn't worthy of an amp and should be replaced. Even a dayton 8" would be a step up and cost as much as a most cheap amps. Unless he went pawning.
When I said "used amp" at a pawn shop, I meant to type "used self-amplified sub".

It was and remains my recommendation (replace the receiver and sub).

My current Set up..up date

Ok here we go:
My equipment is listed below.

I have everything working and it sounds great to me "I'm entry level guy"

Setup:
I have HDMI cable going from cable box to receiver
I have HDMI cable going from blue ray to receiver

I have HDMI OUT going from reveiver to LG Plasma TV

all is good however

One Problem: When I switch to either cable box or DVD/BD from the reeciver
I loose my video on the LG TV "but sound is still there" I have to power off the TV and Power it back on and then I get video. Also If I am watching a HD TV channel and then go to a non HD channel I will loose video "but sound is still there" and have to power off then power on my TV and then video comes back.

My TV is older and I called LG tech support and they think It may be because I have older HDMI 1.1 inputs on the TV and not the latest HDMI 1.3

I hooked up a newer LCD Samsung TV to my setup and all works when I switch between dvd/bd and cbl/sat from the receiver so I know my receiver is working and hooked up correctly.

Do you agree that my LG Plazma tv is the problem or am I missing a setting on the TV.

Thanks

It's probably the TV. Some TVs appear to look for that "HDCP handshake" just once, when powering up, but when it doesn't see it, the TV quits looking for it, and doesn't continually search for it.

Your options:

1. You'll have to fire up the TV last.

2. Forget using HDMI from stb, and use component connections. Theoretically, the performance should be identical with HDTV. OTOH, some persons believe that one connection looks better than another, depending on the particular stb. Therefore, try both, and see. My guess is that they will look identical.

3. Probably won't help much, but skip the receiver altogether, even when using HDMI from stb. The ONLY thing you gain here by doing this is the convenience of not hitting one button on your tv remote. Otherwise, you could gain video calibration per source input for starters. So, if you run hdmi directly to tv, yes you'll need s/pdif to receiver, and an optical cable from Monoprice is probably a whopping $2.

So you're saying I should hook up component from my stb to my receiver component in and then from receiver out to my LG TV correct?
No. STB component cable directly to TV. From STB, an optical (or dig coax) to receiver.

The ONLY thing you gain by running component thru receiver is, again, not having to hit that one button on tv remote. Otherwise, again, you can calibrate to individual source on the tv.

OK, if your receiver has a decent video section, such as Anchor Bay, Reon HQV, Realta, etc, then I can see using the receiver to process the standard def channels. If it was Faroudja I wouldn't bother most likely. In fact, some receiver models actually make the video worse when using component connections.

I would like to note that if you never mentioned the other TV working just fine, I would give this idea greater priority, because back in the day, many if not most cable boxes were not equipped with HDCP repeaters (meaning the signal dies at the receiver).

I'll see what happens,hang on

ok I have video and I can switch from HD to regular ok, but no audio I hooked the Toslink cable from the cable box to the receiver no go
Strange. You are using a dig coax? Or optical? If optical, make sure those plastic tip protectors are removed.

Also look into settings with the cable box itself. It shouldn't be hard to find, as there are not many settings for audio. Maybe something like "digital", or 5.1, or DD, or something.

You can also try a different input on the receiver itself, to make sure the one you're trying is not defective.

It SHOULD work. Something is wrong. If dig coax, I'm assuming you are connecting to the right output/input and STB and receiver . . .

Try dolby, as I mentioned in previous post. Hmm.

If you do not EVER need audio from tv speakers, simply do not connect the red/white RCA component wires. You'll only have three wires running, and not five.

I have to run now. My friend just arrived, and we're meeting up with another friend, to check out his new home he'll move into in a couple of weeks. Other friend is interior designer, and I'm the AV guy. lol

I'll check back later. Sorry, and good luck.
