Stereo rear speakers not working with Smart Tv or Apple Tv apps

I have a Pioneer VSX-70 Elite AV receiver and when I choose any apps on my Smart TV such as Youtube or my new AppleTV box the rear speakers will not work. Does anyone know what I'm missing? They work fine with tv, DVD's, etc.

Are you using one of the "all channel stereo" modes on your receiver? If not, your sources are only two channels and without that, only the front right and left speakers will work.
