Stereo Loudspeaker Placement

Hello

I have a Sony MHC-GX450 with 2 speakers and a subwoofer rated at 140 watts RMS per channel. I wonder about the best placement of the bookshelf type speakers. I want to mount them from the ceiling in the 2 corners opposite the sofa. The distance from me to the speaker is about 112" and the distance between the 2 speakers would be about the same or a little more.

Will that placement give me a good soundstage? As far as I can tell there is no 'hole' in the middle but the left and right channels seem not well defined. The ‘surround’ button does not seem to make any difference in that configuration. Should I point the speakers straight at me tilted downwards? Is it true that the distance between the speakers should be about 85% of the distance between me and the speakers?

I would appreciate your advice.

Cheers

I hate to say it, but corner mounting is right up there among the worst things you could do for your sound. The speakers should be about the same distance apart as you are sitting from them, however placement of the speakers is quite critical. Ideally, you want your main speakers about ear level when you are seated. Main speakers generally do want to be pointed more or less directly at the listening area, likely intersecting just a bit behind your head (providing you don't sit right up against the wall). Each speaker setup and room are different, so you'll have to experiment a bit to get it to sound right.
