On each side of what? Are you suggesting two speakers for the left surround, and two for the right?

Also, where did you get those cool speaker stands that look just like two arms:rolleyes::D

Never tried it. Just don't forget that two speakers run in line alters the ohm load on the receiver...

How close would the second pair be to the first pair? If they are far apart, some directionality might be compromised when they are caled upon to deliver ambiance clues.

If they were right next to or above the first then it would probably be fine, but what would be the purpose then?

...assuming the impedance issues were worked out.

You could put them back-to-back & create a bipolar speaker, or wire one out of phase & create a dipole.
You could experiment with angles & placement for varied results.

yeah. instead of just 1 left or right surround, use 2. maybe 1 1/2' apart, like in the pic. look at it this way. when listening to stereo, the sound stage is wide. now switch to mono and turn off 1 speaker. you can hear exactly where that speaker is. get what i'm saying ?

arm stands = lol .... well, it seems my "idea" is so revolutionary. that most can't comprehend it. so i figured a pic, as crude as it is, would do the trick.

the 4 ohm thing. for me, i don't think that would be an issue.

I think markw is right - you’re trying to overdo what a surround speaker is for, and it could smear localization.

First thing that came to my mind, too! :D

I wanted to link to a thread that I think was put up in 2007 by a member with the word "Dolby" in his name (I'm pretty sure), but I can't find that guy anymore. Maybe he was banned while I was away. Anyway, he had speakers everywhere around his room - far more than seemed like it made sense to me (and others) at the time.

Anyway, Jesse, I'd say give it a try if you're interested! Then you could let us know what you think of it.

smearing localization = isn't that what surrounds are supposed to do ?

would you guys be happy if i cut my arms off and used em as stands ? :D

yeah, i am thinking of a practical way of trying it. but i don't have 4 same speakers.
maybe i will try it anyway, with 2 pair of book shelfs i have.

stay tuned

Only to a point - you want to be able to tell where that voice, gun shot, breaking branch…etc. is coming from.

Well, let’s not go to extremes :p although it would be cool to get some mannequin arms & use them for stands
