I have a

Sony AV Control Center FM Stereo FM-AM Receiver STR-D311 it turns on and makes sound but doesn’t recieve any station am or fm and has distorted sound when playing a cd through the cd input

Did you put a real antenna on it ?
I ask because you wouldn't believe how many posts I've seen around the net (especially with tv sets) where the user does not realize they have to have an antenna.

As far as distortion with cd goes, try other inputs...if they all do that, its fried.

You bought junk. That is 30 years old. It was junk new and still is, but now its clapped out junk.

You may want to try a local store that sells electronics for an inexpensive FM antenna. Ebay and Amazon has them for $9.00
For AM use a straight insulated wire where, 3ft to 6 ft to see if that brings in AM stations for you. There should be a terminal in the back of the unit marked antenna or facsimile. You do need to strip the end of the wire a bit to attach at the AM antenna post.
What is attached to the CD input?
