Standby Mode on Velodyne VX-10

I purchased the VX-10 and had a couple of questions regarding set-up on my subwoofer.

1) I noticed this morning that the Green LED light was on ? even though my receiver was off
is there still a signal being sent, it wasnt doing this 2 days ago.

2) I set all my speakers to SMALL, so could there be a stronger signal going to the sub even if the reciver is off?

3) Last night I heard the sub make a rattling sound for a moment, like the cone was moving real quick ( it stopped on its own )
is that a normal occurence?
My last question is, should I keep my Sony Tower speakers set to SMALL or LARGE? They have a

Frequency Range 45Hz - 50kHz

The Manual states the following:

Auto turn on function

The subwoofer will turn itself on automatically when an audio signal is

present. If no signal is present for approximately 8 minutes, the unit will

switch to standby mode (Red LED). While in standby mode, your subwoofer

will draw very minimal power.

So my understanding is that GREEN means the unit is ON?

not OFF and the RED should be on when there is no Signal from the receiver?

Right...That's why when i saw the LED Green this morning I was wondering if I left the receiver on, but it wasnt

Thanks,

Rob

Your concern is well founded. In auto mode, the sub power indicator LED should be green only when you have signal going to it.

Check your wiring for any loosely connected terminals. If they check out, I would recommend calling Customer Support.

You should have your towers set to small, and use either and 80 or 60 Hz x-over.

It sounds like your amp may have an issue, or as mentioned, you may have a loose connection somewhere.

There's an outside chance that the cable to the sub is picking up a signal. possibly from a nearby power cord? Are you using a well shielded cable? I'm not saying you need to buy a super expensive cable but a typical RCA type wire may not be good enough.

In most cases, setting the speaker to small is best. The stated frequency range of those speakers is most likely, (read), definately not -3db.

45Hz should be easily doable with a properly tuned tower like that. My bookshelf speakers are -3dB at 55Hz...

I've had the feedback problem before with a different sub. I currently have the VX-10 and it's been a great sub for me.

I fished a subwoofer cable under my house from one side of the room to the other...in the process of pulling the cable back up the other side I broke the wiring inside the plug housing. I couldn't tell there was any damage. So I'm all excited to put the sub in the optimal location for the room. I watched a movie and noticed that during quiet parts the sub was humming...after the movie was over and everything turned off the sub was still humming. It took me a few months to finally check inside the plug housing to find that it was broken...about 5 minutes of soldering fixed the problem.

I'd start with your cable connections before tinkering with amp settings and customer support

Thanks to all who responded!
It seems to be working OK now, I did call support, and they told me that sometimes it could be residual signal in the cable coming form the receiver
( which is always in "Standby mode").
The Sub is great...and I'm starting to notice that having all the speakers set to SMALL, that the Highs seems cleaner, and louder! I guess I figured since I had Towers they should be set for LARGE.

Thanks again!

Rob:)

I also got a VX-10 a few days ago and am still trying to get it set just right. I have not had any troubles with it so far though. My fronts are Primus 360's and their lower extension is quite good so there's really not much room for the sub down there but it does add a little more definition and oomf.....or texture. I have them set as large so far and the 150 surrounds as small, but the amp crossover is at 80hz (for the moment anyway) and all going to the sub, not the fronts too. As I switch back and forth between sub and the 360's there's really not much difference though. Again the Infinity's do a good job.

Right now I'm listening to Steely Dan's Two Against Nature. Sounds great! No hip hop boom but plenty of great bass work and well recorded drums. I couldn't imagine needing more sub for my mostly audio system (RX-V659).

Have you volume matched the primus speakers and sub using an spl meter? Where is the sub located? I would think you would notice a reasonable difference but then again I've never listened to the Primus speakers you refer to. What's there lower frequency response?

No I havent used an SPL meter as I don't yet have one. I generally have a good ear for these things. The sub is near but not in the corner next to the LF speaker. There is a reasonable difference, I'm just saying it's not that much, especially in the normal range of music. The primus' are rated to 38hz and are sitting on a tile over concrete floor with the rest of the room being carpeted.

With the sub set to the speakers level (approximately) just to serve as a proper extension the difference when I switch between speaker and sub for the Low Freq is subtle but noticable on most of what I listen to, classic rock, jazz and electric blues.

As I said I'm enjoying the sub so far, and I'm sure for movies it will be great (I may need to turn it up a little) but for the music end I probably could have done without. Then again it was only $150! :)
