I just got my 6th speaker, now making a 6.1 system. The right surround is placed on a stand approx. 1.5 ft away from the edge of the couch. I can't move it anywhere really because the speaker is only like 3/4 ft away from the wall. So the question is, as for my left surround speaker should I place it against the adjacent wall, making it about 4 or 5 ft from my couch, or move it 1.5ft like the other speaker? I know the automatic optimizer on my reciever will figure out the speaker volume levels etc. but any advice?

How would it look asthetically if you place the left surround 1.5 ft away like the right. If it looks okay and would fit into you room decor, that is what I would do. Otherwies, as you suggest place it against the left wall and boost the gain until it sounds equal.

You may find out your "automatic optimizer" isn't capable of performing miracles.

Due to logistics, not every room lends itself well to a 6 or 7 channel system.

Sometimes it's barely able to accomodate a 5 channel system.
