Can you split optical and or digital audio? I've run out of digital inputs on my receiver.

Yes, but you cannot even attempt to try and use both at the same time. I have a 6-track digital hard disc recorder with an optical output. I have this into a splitter from Parts Express jointly with my CD player then into my Yamaha RX-V1400. Haven't had any problems yet.

What would happen if I did?
What I'm doing is: I am not willing to spend $1000 on a HD TiVo with directv. So, I planned on leaving my standard DVR 40 receiver and directv's HD receiver. So, when I want to watch HD programming, I should turn off my TiVo receiver?
Would it be better to split the digital or optical?
Can I buy a splitter like this from a retail store?

I realized this question should be in Amps, Pre-Pros & Receivers section, so I asked it there.
