Perhaps posting should be restricted to those with an education of at least a B.S. degree. A doctorate degree would be strongly recommended, however.

I agree with MDS (yet again ;) ). The state of a person's English is completely independant from them holding a degree or not. Holding a degree only signifies that the person possesses a certain level of knowledge in that field.

Or at least, should do...

There are plenty of college graduates that can't write or spell worth a crap and that really bothers me.
I fall into this category, who needs to spell correctly when we have MS word?
Also, I don't do math in my head.

Oh no, please tell us you are not one of the younger generation that can't calculate sales tax without the aid of a calculator. :)

Oh, I could do it, but why bother? :D

Seriously, though, I do scare myself sometimes when I reach for the calculator for an extremely simple calculation. I have to stop and slap myself. I routinely do % calcs in my head, but what is really scary is that I believe a large portion of the population have trouble figuring out 10%.

I heard a story once, don't know if it's true, that McDonald's was considering making a 1/3 pound burger. Their market research showed that it would be unsuccessful because many people would think it was smaller than the 1/4 pound burger.

...It's only a mild form of dyslexia...I od it lal the tiem...the brain knows what it wants to say but something gets lost in the transition to the fingers...(sh)it happens.

I certainly agree with the overall tone of the thread however...how can the content be relied upon if the spelling and grammar is at best, second-rate? As the old saying goes "you only get one chance to make a first impression".

I mean it's one thing if you're a really bad speller and something else entirely if your just too lazy to proofread...and then, of course, it might be something else entirely...

I guess you had one of those lazy moments - should have been you're. [Just ribbing you. :)]

That's the kind of error we really need to be able to catch. Sometimes it truly is just a typo...but a simple spell checker won't catch it.

That was funny.

I didn't mean too much mfabien. Have you ever been working in MS Word and mistype a word. Spellcheck sometimes suggests words they are not even close. Using techinical words at work, as well as acronyms, it gets kind of funny to see the suggestions it will come up with. That's the kind of thing I was talking about.

I have to admit I am one that doesn't take the time to proof read most of the time. Hence the "woudl." (EDIT:: meant to be mispelled here)

#SLAP#

I gave myself a slap on the wrist for it and will promise to try to proofread from now on. Starting with this thread.

(I hope I don't miss anything that would be embarassing.)

Acronyms and Metaphors

In addition to improving our spelling, IMO, we should avoid the use of acronyms, and we should forswear metaphors like the plague.

Even though this is a very valid point to ease the reading experience on this site, it's some what pointless. This foum probably has the best grammer and spelling out of all the forums on the net....probably.

The one thing that should be changed is the acronyms. AFAKIA blah, using these acronyms seems counter-productive. Sure we can keep the basics, but if theres more then 3 letters, whats the point? Just type a full sentence you lazy arse.

As for spelling, as long as theres a clear message, I don't think its that important to flame someone about it. Plus apostrophe's are not the end of the world.
