We should all pay attention to spelling when we post a message.

It would be neat if the Forums would carry a spelling check facility which could be used before submitting a post.

In my case, I use the APSC Spellcheck by Palmware which is a free download from: http://www.buzzys.net/spellcheck.html

And for a specific word check, I use WordWeb 2.2 but a newer version 3.3, which is a free version, can be downloaded from:
http://www.download.com/WordWeb/3000-2079_4-10341450.html

I wholeheartedly agree and would like to pursue this ASAP. We will look into it.

There is a SpellCheck plugin/hack for vBulletin, but we are almost at a point of a major (v3.5) upgrade. After the upgrade I'll put in the new code.

Once it's in place, I would wish Gene or Clint to announce its existence with a strong recommendation to make use of it to members of the Forum, out of respect not only for readers but for themselves.

It will hopefully reduce some frequent misspelled words such as "seperate" instead of separate. Unfortunately, because both words are in the speller, those who constantly say "to much" instead of "too much" will carry on with these kinds of mistakes.

A spell checker won't catch grammatical errors.

It won't catch these common mistakes:
to vs too vs two
lose vs loose (my all-time worst pet peeve)
forth vs fourth
its vs it's
their vs there vs they're
your vs you're
and on and on....

Wha? It's still English, though a very bastardized version of it. What's even worse is that people who come to this country and have learned English as a second language often have a better understanding of it than people born here! Take the classic "you're vs. your". That one really grinds my gears.

.....too vs to, is another gear-grinder, Jaxvon, but nothing like lose vs loose......

I can't STAND when people incorrectly spell use lose - except that I laugh when people, trying to be smart alecs, call someone a looser - that's just funny.

cut and paste

I’m the world’s worst speller! I type all of my post in word and then cut and paste. It’s rather hard to take someone’s advice on a technical issue if they are unable to relay the information in an intelligent manner.

...but the speller will catch our typos. And typing quickly in order not to lose our train of thought, we do make typos and some we (at least I) do not see them even with a visual verification.

Even though a spell-checker highlights mistakes in a person's text, it will not improve their English. That should be the real goal.

Yes I use WordWeb (same?) for single word search and synonyms. But what is needed, within the Forum before posting, is a complete text speller.

Perhaps posting should be restricted to those with an education of at least a B.S. degree. A doctorate degree would be strongly recommended, however.

Get real. There are plenty of college graduates that can't write or spell worth a crap and that really bothers me. I see it all the time at work and not one person has less than a BS in some engineering discipline. People write entire paragraphs as one single run-on sentence - no punctuation, no capitalization, and alot of the aforementioned simple spelling errors.

This morning I finally understood that is what you meant and then saw your post confirming it.

Yes it makes a good verification tool and for more than spelling. But everyone using Windows, as an O/S, has Word and few would use it when posting to Forum boards. I guess the reason is that we are too lazy to make the effort. Incorporating a speller and activating it by a simple click of the mouse, when you type a message, is really the way to go to resolve spelling mistakes and typos.
