Measurement of AE5 (not AE 5+)

I'm sorry. I tried looking up some more, and think I have decided that I want active monitors after all like the AudioEngine A5+. Mainly because an amp for the Tannoy would cost too much. Now, as far as I could tell, you still need a DAC for this model (A5+), whereas the A2+ does not. Yet the smaller woofers in the A2+ has made them incorporate some kind of bass layer onto it, so that it doesn't fit as well for acoustic etc.

But with the A5+, is it also possible to add a subwoofer? And what DAC can one recommend for such a model? Last question also, is there a model more expensive than this, which potentially offers more value for the money (simply a KILLER product priced above it)?
the recommended speakers are all very good. if you want to spend more money it would better go into your sub woofer.

Scandinavia :) Found out that there is a really nice music shop not that far into town. Will stop by and be able to listen to Yamaha HS8, KRK Rokit RP5 / 6 / 8, Eris E5, Adam A5X, M-audio A42, Genelec 8010, M-Audio BX6. Too bad they don't have AudioEngine A5+, but at least I'll get to test a lot of them. I'll check if any other local store has the A5+.

Some measurements from these fine monitors (some more fine than others)
TL;DR: Genelec (way above your budget - costs here $800/pr) is very likely to be most accurate and neutral.

Why do I write these posts when you obviously don't read them?

I don't know about a DAC. Keep on reading the info on the site.

In any case, I'm done here. You've gotten a wealth of good info in this thread. It's too bad you don't realize it. Good luck.

And you might want to post your location in your personal information. That way, we ALL know where you're from and could have saved a lot of mental masturbation.

I hear you.
I obviously didn't post these graphs for OP, but might come handy to someone looking for inexpensive monitors

this thread offered a LOT of good info for near field/computer speakers. Let's hope it doesn't go to waste.

Since you're on the wrong side :p of the Atlantic ocean if you might be able to get these:
Swissonic ASM5
If you see these: Buy and don't think twice.

Unfortunately those are not in stock over here, but appear to be so in Germany primarily. ^^

Why do you think like that? You were the one who convinced me to go for active speakers instead of passive ones. I have learnt a lot just from this thread alone. I am considering the Audioengine A5+ you were suggesting, just stating that I will go to a local music shop to listen to a lot of different models. I suspect perception of sound to be individual after all.
The shop actually got those! I definitely will then. :)

for the record AE 5+ are not active, but powered speakers. Small but important difference.

Heck, I tried the Adam A5X + Adam Sub 7 today, along with Focal Alpha 50 and the Yamaha HS5. Only the Adam A5X with a sub, had the transparency I get from my Swans M200 MKIII at home. Albeit the treble was even cleaner. The thing is, two A5X with a sub, refurbished, will set me back 1050 dollars. I got the Swans M200 MKIII for 370 dollars back in the day. They are no longer produced, nor imported, which is a damn shame. Would kill the other competitors in terms of value. By no means would I pay triple that price for the Adams, albeit it was just ever so slightly cleaner in all ways. I am seriously contemplating just going for it, and ordering the Audioengine A5+. It's only 300 dollars, so at least I won't become dissatisfied because I paid that much. No way to get them on display, I'm afraid. :(

I'm sorta surprised you didn't liked Focal Alpha 50 - they measure really well... but you may prefer more specific sound.

I did like the Focal Alpha 50, but it's kinda hard when you notice you have better speakers at home (the Swans). The transparency wasn't quite there compared to the Adam A5X, which seemed like it brought forth another bright layer onto the music. Listening individually, I really did feel fine with the Focal, but when comparing the two, it was very clear that the Adams were much superior. As they should be, in their price range.

Haha, I wish you tested them before knowing the prices. Higher price does not necessitate higher quality product.
Swissonic for example are excellent speakers compared to much pricier Dynaudio for example.
The knowledge of pricing could affect your judgement easily.
Sound memory is typically not very reliable instrument

In this case, it really did. But might also be because a quality sub was hooked up to the Adams. :)

So since the A2+ is mainly much worse in the bass area, would it be a better performer buying A2+ and SVS SB1000 sub? Especially when considering I don't really plan to drive these loud?

Did you have a change to audition the Behringers? If so, how did you like them?
