speakers/receiver for my office?

Hi,

Could you good folks please give me suggestions for my office sound system. I’d like to listen while working at my desk.

The room is about 10’x12’x8’. M ydesk is 30" high, and is up against two big windows. There is ~ 10” between my desk and windows.

I listen to classic music, and have a good ear.

I don’t want to spend more than $1500 for the speakers.

I think the speakers should be placed in front of my desk facing me (right?).

I think a pair of bookshelf speakers on stands in front of my desk, and a subwoofer would be the only choice.

Axiom M22 seem to be a good choice (based on the review here), since they are only 8” deep, and would fit between my desk and the windows.

For the sub, it looks as if rocket ULW-10 is OK.

I have no idea what receiver to get. The high-end ones have more bells and whistles than I need, and I’d don’t know if cheaper ones are good.

I’d appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks!

You need a speaker good for near field listening if you sitting about 4 feet from them.

For this application, try the Era Design 4, an SVS PB10-NSD and a Yamaha RX-V659. Should be under $1500 complete and it will sound fantastic.

Thank you all for the suggestions - here and by private messages.

Era speakers are interesting, but there there are no Era dealers where I am.

Not to push paradigms but you should go audition the studio 20's. 2 of those and the Yamaha 659 should give you a nice office system.

For stero only, in a room that size, I'd seriously consider either a small sub or no sub at all, with a good medium size bookshelf and an integrated amp or stereo receiver. A bigger sub is going to totally overpower that room.

I think the Studio 20s are a good recommendation and with plenty of power you can probably get away with no sub with them.

That's what I was thinking. The studios and the 659 make a great 2.0 system. I still play some of my music in "pure direct" to by-pass the sub because they sound so good.

I’m worried about the sub, and also though it would be better to get only bookshelf speakers with good bass extension.

But, as I wrote in my initial post, I have only 10-11 inches between my desk and windows. I don’t want to move my desk back.

The Paradigm Studio 20s are almost 13 inches deep.

So, I’m looking for good musical speakers, with best possible bass, that are less than 11 inches deep (the narrower, the better). That’s why I initially picked the Axioms that are 8” deep.

Thanks for all the input!

I cant quite picture the set-up but how tall is your desk? Will speaker stands place the speakers above it?

I don't quite understand either, are the speakers going to be mounted somehow? The M22s should do the trick just fine, but they won't have as much bass as the 20s, in which case you might need a sub.

There are also the Ascend Acoustics CBM-170SEs that are 10" deep, though they aren't big in the bass department either.

My desk in 30 inches high, 36 inches deep, and 70 inches wide. I sit facing two big windows, which together are as wide as my desk. I don’t want to move my desk more than about 10 inches from the windows (the closer to the windows the better).

I thought that I would put the speakers on 30 inch high stands between desk and windows. If needed, I could build a step for under the stands to raise the speakers higher.

Thanks!

The Onix Ref .5 and an X-sub with any decent integrated or stereo receiver might handle things well also. The .5s are only ~7.5" deep.
