Speakers for kitchen

I'm looking for a decent pair of bookshelf type speakers, maybe cubes such as, dare I say, BOSE to be placed on the top of my kitchen cabinets. Something that is small enough, but provides an adequate amount of bass. I have approximately 12" of clear space between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. My concern (and maybe I'm just being paranoid) is the accumulation of dust and grease from cooking and the potential of damaging the speakers.

FYI, I own Axiom M60's and a VP100 in my basement, but I'm just a little too protective to spend that kind of cash on a similar system for the kitchen.:)

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm a Newbie, so please be gentle!

Kitchen speakers

Raz,
Any speaker should hold up fine in the kitchen. It would be overkill, but you could get an outdoor type speaker which is resistant to moisture, humidity, etc.
If you like your Axioms, pick up a pair of their M2 or M3 bookshelf speakers. The Onix X-LS speakers from AV123.com would also be a good option.

For something less obtrusive, inceiling speakers work well for background music in the kitchen or other rooms, however, they will not perform as well as comparably priced bookshelf speakers.

Also, consider upgrading your axiom center to the VP150.
