speakerbuilding, wierd horn question....

I'm tempted to start up a new project, but I want to mak sure this is even feasable yet, since I do have a bad habit of getting into stuf that is way out there.

Well, I pretty much like the smooth sound of a folded horn loudspeaker, but I was thinking "Hmm Steve....is it possible to make a D`appolito folded horn design?"

I am not very well versed in horns, as all my speakerbulding has pretty much been simple 2-way 2-driver, ported speakers....so this is quite a step up....I just wnat to know if this is going to be too nasty to do the calculations on pen and paper, or if it's gong to be too hard to build one, etc. If one already exists it would be cool if I could have a link, so I can see how they done it.

I am curently thinking of using Klipsch drivers in this project.

Thanks,

I wouldn't think a horn D'Appolito design would be any more or less difficult than one with any other type of HF driver, though one factor may be the size of the horn relative to the midbass drivers and whether or not you can get the correct baffle spacing.

JBL has some horn based designs that might be like what you are thinking: K2, 880. The 880 is interesting, it looks like there are actually two horn loaded drivers in the center array.

Those are very similar to what I had in mind, except there would be two horns and two exit points...one on the bottom, one on the top.

Like I said, I have no idea if having two separate horns like that is even a good idea, but I love the sound of horns, and don't have the floorspace for a large speaker, so I'm building vertically :)

Actually here is the speaker kit that gave me the concept...I looked at it and said "you know, add a large horn tweeter module in place of the "pod" horn tweeter, and a second one of these wooferhorns upside down, and it could be pretty cool" http://www.madisound.com/bk16.html That's pretty much the kind of horn enclosure I was thinking of.

Space will be your problem. The kit you show is a folded back horn so only the LF from the enclosure is horn loaded not a true folded horn woofer like a Klipschhorn or Heartsfield. In those designs the driver is horn loaded troughout it's entire range. Low frequency folded horns are large becasue the moth size has to be large to support the lowest octaves. There is simply no way around this. You could choose a higher cut off but then you would need a sub to fill in. You may want to dry reflex enclosures with a horn in the middle llike a K2
