Speaker System for A Newbie

Hey everybody,

I am trying to set up my first home theater system. I graduated college in 07 and have been living at home and saving money for the past year. I am moving out at the beginning of next year and want to set up a home theater system to go with my panasonic 50" plasma I am watching in my room .
I want to spend roughly $2500 dollars and have a few things in mind. I was looking at the emotiva ER 15 system 5.1 for now ($950), av123 mfw 15 subwoofer ($700), and either the Onkyo 805 or the Pioneer Elite 92 Receiver (both of which are around $800). Do you guys like this setup or have any other suggestions? Which receiver would you prefer for the system? I am open to anything as I know very little and you guys know a lot more. The Emotiva system is a excellent budget system. IMO you might want to think about less receiver and spending more on mains.

I have not heard AV123, so I can't recommend them... but if you have... I figured I would throw that out there because someone posted it elsewhere.

I'm running this system, minus the MFW-15. I have a PB-13 Ultra for my sub. I must say, it's an excellent system for the money. It would probably push you over your budget though, once you figure in proper amplification. But it does sound excellent! You may want to look at Emotiva amps, if you're looking for more power on a budget.

+1. This is great advice. Speakers are way to subjective to start throwing around phrases like "these are the best" or "get these, you won't be sorry." Even if you like them in the showroom they may take on different sound characteristics in your room using your gear. That's why it is best to listen to everything possibly within your price range, take the final candidates home and then return the losers. Not all dealerships will allow this, but many will with the proper coercion. If you want ID, they all offer a minimum of a 30 day in-home trial period with a money back guarantee.

I personally preferred the Onkyo 805 over the Pioneer Elite, but that's just me. I do believe they have better Burr Brown DAC's as well.

Get out there and subject yourself to some gear, and have fun.

I have this exact system and I enjoy it very much for both music and movies. Plus, the beautiful finish is just icing on the cake. Great system for the price.

The downfall is that they have limited on hands for that sale and shipping gets delayed often. If you are patient, definately worth a look. Plus they have a 30 day trial and will refund everything including shipping if you return them.

The only bookshelf I know that can dig into the 35Hz region with authority are the Totem 1s and they require a beast of an amplifier to properly drive them.

Most bookshelves go down around between 45 to 50 Hz. If you want that kind of extension, your options are augementing the bookshelves with a sub woofer or go with towers/floorstanders.
