5.1 systems

In the $1k price range I would check out the SVS and Onix-LS bookshelf systems. The Klipsch synergy series is their low end line that you find at BB and CC.

I second looking somewhere else.

1k is not a lot of money for a complete system but I think the money would be better spent elsewhere.

When you see the picture quality of HD-DVD you will HAVE to have something equal for sound...they just go hand in hand.

I am an av123 cheerleader so of course check them out. The X-series is awesome and pair it with a healthy sub and you will be rocked. Also look at the ref .5 speakers, family pricing is 100 less so you could get 3 pairs for 600 plus shipping which actually isnt too high for these because they are small (paid 47 to ship 3). That would leave you a good chunk for a HSU or SVS sub.

If you want to spend a little less maybe check out home theater direct and hopefully you would have enough left over for a good sub.

OR...

This is a blind reccommendation, but they look cool, check out the mini tower series that athena sells, in the 1k thread I came up with a 5.0 that ran right at 700 or so.

OK i looked at AV123 X-series and they look good. Is the sub that comes in the 5.1 package good enough. I see where for 200.00 more you can upgrade to the 400.00 12inch Sub w/350 watts powered. Or do you still suggest getting a different Sub. The reviews on that 12inch upgrade seemed very good.

Also i was thinking of getting the Pioneer Elite VSX-81TXV Receiver ($700.00) but was also looking at the Panasonic XR57 ($300.00) which has all the HDMI hookups i need for my HD-DVD player and would save me $400.00. Question is will this reciever be able to power these speakers ok?

A lot of people are using the Panny XR57 or 55 for their X series system and love it.

There is a pretty big thread about it in the X series section of the AV123 forum.

What size is your room? I have an X-sub in15x18 room and it is a very musical sub but it only reaches into the 30s so sometimes stuff like explosions get a little hairy. It has won some best of the year or best buy kind of awards so dont think for a second its not a tough guy...it just might get outclassed in a big room.

I honestly think it would be crazy to pass up that deal on the Yamaha. On the other hand, I wouldn't care for the small drivers in the 5.1 system. They would be fine as presence or surround back. I would just hate to have such a small center. It could be a starting point to get you up-and-running, and then get the larger center later.

AV123 has their own forum. They also have a forum at AudioCircle. I myself have purchased speakers and electronics from them and was very impressed with the service. The packaging is tremendous, with peices double boxed in very stout containers. I bought an Onix SP3 and a pair of Onix Ref 1 speakers in Rosewood. I haven't heard the X models, but everyone I know who's heard them has been very impressed by their sound as well as the level of fit & finish. I believe Danny Richie of GR Research voiced them and designed the xovers. From my research & the opinions of several guys I trust, I don't think you could go wrong with them.

I see them all mentioned at pretty much every forum. You won't find brands like AV123 or Axiom in stores new because they sell internet direct only.

The "Premier Acoustic PA-6F Home Theater System" looks like a Klipsch knock-off. I'd avoid them unless I could find some impartial reviews from some third party (not the reviews posted on the sellers forum).

I don't want to bash Klipsch, but I don't care for their speakers. Their Reference line is okay, but I haven't really liked the sound of any of the other models I've heard from them, going all the way back to the early 80's. Some love the "horn" sound, but to me Klipschs sound bright & strident. Not that I've heard them all, but quite a few. It may be Heresy p ) but I didn't like the K-Horns, either. The newish Ref line does seem better balanced, but there's a lot of speakers in their price range I like more. NOTE: my comments pertain to Klipsch's playing music- they probably work much better for HT.

Let me qualify this by saying I'm sure you'll find many who disagree with me. Different strokes and all. That's why it's tough to buy speakers without an opportunity to hear them. At least if you buy from a reputable direct sales company you'll generally be able to return them for a refund if they don't float your boat.

Buy a pair of the Onix X-LS bookshelf speakers and hear for yourself. Most ID companies have a 30 day return/trial period because they stand behind their products.

If you go Onix, I think they are still offering a $100 off coupon towards their upcomming 15" ported sub. It should be out by February and might be worth the wait. It will have much more output than any of their 10" subs or 2 or the 8" X-subs.

Five, I agree with jcPanny about ID speakers. To add my spin, I think one should start the search for new speakers by local auditioning of as many speakers as you can that are in your price range and go from there. What ever you end up buying, start with auditioning IMO.

Man, If I got paid for all of their speakers I bought I would be a very happy man.

I talk about av123 because I have experience with them, if I ever hear axioms or any other ID brand I will talk about them too, but I dont know very much and I wont talk about something I dont know.

Do to the nature of the company and business model, Internet Direct companies have to advertise on the internet. They can deliver higher value products because they cut out the supply and distribution chain and the markup associated with it. They can't afford huge marketing budgets for magazine adds and informertials like Bose.
