what is all the fuss about speaker stand height, and what should stands be filled with...? am i suppose to use lead weight, or sand- i have read that some dont insulate vibrations, or is that snake oil bs

Mostly BS IMO. I could never tell the difference between a card board box and genuine Paradigm speaker stands.

You want the tweeters to be ear height, for most speakers. I know of one that needs to be higher as it has a better hf response about 7 deg below the speakers from left to right.

Similar to mtrycraft's post, ideally you'd like the height of the tweeter as close to ear level as possible. Not a complete necessity, but that's the idea behind using speaker stands.

As for what you fill them with, I think it's more important from a stability standpoint than it having anything to do with an impact on sound reproduction. Last I checked, speaker stands didn't have any specs from their tests in anechoic chambers... -TD
