Speaker spikes, who uses them

I have read the education section about the use of speaker spikes but have not decided if it is worth having the "it will tear up the carpet" conversation over. Who uses speaker spikes and have you noticed any benefits, beyond the theoretical?

My mains are on berber, and they are spiked. Indention's in the carpet look permanent. I have more love for my speakers than my carpet.

Wife don't know about the carpet.

I use them mainly because it makes the speaker sit more solidly and also allows easy adjustment if the speaker happens to tilt to one side. If you just plop it down on the carpet without spikes you would have to use a shim if it won't sit straight.

I use them for stability. However, I did need to remove them from one speaker stand because I needed the base to be lower, and that stand seems pretty stable without them. I'm getting new carpet and will probably initially try them out without stands, but I'm not concerned about putting them on the carpet.

Depending on your style of carpet, there may be no noticeable lasting effects from the spikes. At least, certainly no worse than the effects of any other piece of furniture that sits on the carpet for any period of time.

Sometimes I have used them, sometimes not. I have yet to hear any difference.

I use them to keep the speaker more stable. Works GREAT on the carpet.

If I had tile hardwood or stone I would probably use a rubber mat.

Biggest benefit to me is that the make the speakers more stable on carpet. Especialy if you have a deep nap or pad. If you have pets I think it's a must. My can jumped on one of my towers once before I put the fear of god in him, and he actually made it quiver when he jumped off it. The cat is only 8 pounds or so. Pluss they look midevil!

I use them in all my floorstanders. The spikes keep them anchored to the carpet so they don't fall over if a kid of dog bumps into them...

I used spikes that were placed on pennies to protect the hardwoods but I knocked them off the pennies a couple of times and scratched the floors. I now just use rubber feet.

As i can tell most of you are going to disagree with me, but I think there is a major difference in sound when you're using spikes. On my speakers it's like day and night. Could'nt do without them.

WOW "day" and "night" that's a big difference. I am using the back feet on Def Techs does that count ? Or am I only at noon ?

Pretty big case of placebo effect you've got going there!
Even if there were some effect (which is doubtful), it would be at most extremely subtle. No possibility that it could be "day and night"!

Walter, if you enjoy your system better with the spikes, then good for you. Placebo or real, it works for you - that's all that matters in my book.

I couldn't imagine having my speakers without spikes! It makes a huge difference....but not with the sound. I enjoy the fact that I can attempt to aerate my carpet with my speakers if I so choose.

For my HT mains, I use the spikes for the front feet only. I wanted to angle them up a bit, as I have two rows. I can't be bothered to angle them a bit more, but I'm sure that would probably help.

For my electrostat stereo system, I use a funky arrangement that I won't explain right now. However, the goal was to put the panels in a truly vertical position, without rake.

IOW, I'm not doing this for any anti-transmission, de-coupling purposes. Only for speaker orientation.

Judginng by your signature you're gonna have to go down Federal Hwy about 3 miles and hang a left at the Dunkin Donuts. That should put you about half way there.

My floorstanders have spike-like feet built onto them, but I have small squares of fabric under each one of them.
