Speaker setup Denon AVR-2307

Hi

I need som advice on how to setup the speakerconfiguration with the following components:

- 4x Bose 161 in room A (living room)
- 2x Bose 301 in room B (open space kitchen)

Both zones are direct connected with no wall or door in between. Most of the time I will listen to the same stereo input channel (we like to party). I assume I won't need a subwoofer with these speakers, but that I can tell after setup. I rarely watch a movie in room A (which is the living room) so stereo performance is preferred here.

Question 1
I don't plan to connect a center speaker (I don't have one). Will this be a problem during setup ?

Question 2
Please advice me on what speakerconfiguration I have to chose within the setup panels:

- 5.1 + 2 ch
- 7.1 ?

Question 3
Do I have to select a DSP setting to listen to plain stereo ?

Question 4
I still have to purchase all Bose speakers. Do they match this receiver ?

Thanks.
Ray.

Incorrect assumption. You will need a subwoofer with those speakers.

Since you will not be using the room A for movies, it should not be a problem. The receiver will complain that the center is missing, but you can tell it to ignore the error during setup.

Question 2

- 7.1 ?
Neither of these will be correct since you are not using the center channel or a subwoofer. But for your purpose, 5.1 + 2Ch

Question 3
Do I have to select a DSP setting to listen to plain stereo ?
Plain stereo will have only 2 speakers running. To have the 4 speakers in room A running in stereo select "All Channel Stereo" mode.

Question 4
I still have to purchase all Bose speakers. Do they match this receiver ?
The Bose sepakers will work with the receiver. Now this is just a stroke of luck. I would recommend not getting the Bose speakers since for the price you can do much better. Look at the Audioholics Speaker reviews for ideas.

Did you already purchase the Bose speakers? Just curious.

I am about to purchase the complete Bose set. IMHO the 301 set does not need to be paired to a sub, they should provide sufficient low. The 161 satellite speakers could do without in a square (traditional) setup.
When needed adding a Bose sub should do the trick.

Any suggestions on the speaker part are welcome though, I will visit the shop tomorrow so there is still some time for you all to convince me turning to something completely different. The Denon 2307 is already bought and ready to deploy. I could get it for 612 euros, a real bargain.

Have you considered Paradigm or visiting a high end Home theater store to see what you could also get?

Typically you wont find many Bose supporters on these forums.

Step 1: Do not buy the Bose.
Step 2: Read through the speaker forum and the pro reviews to gather advice and information.
Step 3: Listen to as many speakers as you can.
Step 4: Post your impressions, desires, thoughts, etc in this thread or a new thread in the speaker forum.
Step 5: Once you have gathered enough information, opinion and first hand experience through auditions, then buy speakers that will keep you happy for many years. To ensure your long term satisfaction, refer to step 1.

I have a pretty good idea of the Denon AVR-2307's setup menu. If you need help, PM me or post it here. It can be tricky at first, but once you're used to it, it's all good.

Without trying to turn this into yet another Bose-bash thread...

For god's sake don't but Bose speakers. They are crap. Crap, crap, crap. The 301's would need a big sub. They don't go low; they don't go anywhere. They're garbage. Expensive garbage. There is no point whatsoever having a nice receiver and pairing it to Bose... that would just be a waste of money in every direction. Polk or Athena both offer an infinity more performance at a small fraction of the cost. There is a reason why there are no stats attached to Bose... because if you saw them, they would not even make sense they're so out of whack. Staaaaaaay awaaaaaaaaaay! Danger! Danger! Danger!

But as I said, not to turn this into another Bose-bash.... :p

Check-out the specs for the 301's. This is taken directly from the Bose site:

Each speaker: • 9 3/4"H x 14 1/3"W x 9 5/8"D • (24.8 x 36.2 x 24.9 cm)

Pair in carton: • 18 1/3"H x 24 1/5"W x 13 1/4"D • (45.5 x 61.3 x 33.6 cm) • 27.7 lbs. (12.6 kg)

LOL!

And the reviews:

Nice. Maybe I'll let Architectural Digest choose the headers and intake for my car.

I owe you some results.
I decided to go for the Bose 301 for the open kitchen (partyplace) and the Bose 201 set for the livingroom. I connected them separated on channel B and A.

I know I disappointed some of you, but I can tell the sound is good, at least good enough for me. I have to get used to the new sound after so many years hooked to the dynamics of the 5.1 subwoofer bass, but I know I will appreciate the new sound, which is crisp and clear. To accompany the 201 I will experiment using an old JBL subwoofer. I will get you updated on that as well. I need a converter cable for it.

Oh one more thing: can I configure the Denon to increase volume in larger increments? At the moment I have to turn the knob quite a few times before it all sounds good. I would like to configure the Denon 2307 volume knob to speed up the volume a bit more.

Regards.
Ray.

After the replies? You are joking, right?

I am sure it will take a few da, yea, well, a lifetime.

Ah, yes. Nothing like a JBL sub to get those Bose kicking.;)

The best way to get the volume knob to make the Bose "sound good", is to return them.;)

The volume knob on the Denon's is configured to react to the speed at which you rotate it.

Crank it hard with a quick flick of the wrist, and the volume will change substantially. I can go from mute (-80.0dB to around -5.0 dB in one half turn).

Turn it slowly and it will move in 0.5dB steps.
