Speaker set ups?

but...9.1?

Whats that?

Nothing doing yet for true 9.1.

The new Yamaha is set up like this:

YAMAHA RX-Z9 9.1 Home Theater Surround Sound Receiver
9.1 Channel, 1290 Watts (170 Watts x 7 + 50W x 2 )

The last two are used for a different zone or bi-amping. When 9.1 does come around, you'll need a long room like a movie theater, and more surround speakers will be put on the wall for an "enveloping effect." Don't hold your breath though for movies to do that for a long time. 7.1 only matrixes the rear channels, you only really have a true 6.1 system for now.

9.1 also gives the ability to use presence speakers at the same time as surround back speakers. A minor short coming of the mid priced Yamahas.

adding a little to BEF1 here, there's guarentee today's hardware with 9.1 channels will work with whatever standards they eventually come up with for 9.1

I don't use presence speakers so I can't speak for their usefulness. They go above and to the outside of the mains/fronts. Supposedly they recieve certain signals that would otherwise be sent to the fronts anyway. I have read it stated that they enhance DSP modes. I'll probably never know for sure. Having seven speakers and a subwoofer in the living was a hard sell as it was with my girlfriend. Adding another pair is not in my immediate future.

Another question: Do you HAVE to have a receiver that alows 2 subs to be hooked up to hook up 2 subs or can you use a Y-cable on a receiver with only one sub out and hook up two subs to it?

The RX-Z9 does have outputs for front and rear (or left and right) subs.
