I'd imagine it's a bit overstated but even if 3-4dB that's still fairly sensitive. Didn't know there were any of these left....
We see Klipsch speakers with advertised Sensitivity of 98-100db/w/m all the time, which as you mentioned usually means 93-95dB.

So I'm wondering if these Energy speakers are now more like Klipsch. Or did Klipsch buy out Energy? :D

Yes, Klipsch owns the product group that includes Energy. That happened a while ago IIRC.

Ah, that explains the "96dB" sensitivity. :D

So now Energy speakers are essentially Klipsch speakers, not that there's anything wrong with that. :D

Does Oppo 203-205 have a proper volume control or they do it digitally as 103-105?

I didn't think Energy speakers were still in production....

I don't know about the 103 and 203. I have the 105 and I believe the 205 has the same kind of digital volume control via the ES DAC chip. Apparently the 205 has 0.5 dB resolution so as long as you don't set the volume below around 50 you will not lose anything.

105 and 205 appear to use the same digital volume control.

So basically it is ok to use oppo as preamp? What scale is 50 on? How much it will be in db from ref level? Wasvthinking to buy 203 and use it in this config in another room.

50 over 100.

From what I see in the 203 there is no particular basis via calibration to the volume level, just an arbitrary number.

The asynch USB (back of unit) does not...from my understanding it terminates at the dedicated stereo dac.
Maybe you didn't see my post after that one? Both of my rear USB 3.0 ports handle multi-channel content (as well as the front 2.0 port), FLAC 5.1 in my case that I've ripped from dvds (or movies, etc). I play them digitally and that may be where the difference lies (or specific type of multi-ch file).

No, didn't get very far on the thread before I shut down the office today...noted.

I know I have the 7.1 analog, and hdmi on the back for MC audio, never have paid attention to USB on the back aside from the Async.
