Speaker/ reciever buzz

i have a sony gx40es reciever and its 15 years old and about a year ago i noticed this buzzing noise and i had no idea what it was comming from, its not anything from the am fm tuner, but when i change the reciever from radio to cd it makes a lower buzzing noise, im not really sure whats going on so if you could put your input on whats going on id really appreciate it.

It could be a number of issues. If you take it in for repair, chances are you'll be stuck with a bill that is higher than a new lower-end Yamaha receiver, which would be much better than the 15 yr old receiver you have now.

Do you hear this buzzing from the speaker or when you are next to the receiver and sounds mechanical?

OK, then we can do some troubleshooting

Unplug every input to the receiver and see if that buz is still there. While everything is unplugged, select the different inputs, particularly the CD and see if that buzz is still there.
How loud is it, by the way. Can you hear it at the listening position or must go up to it to hear?

i unplugged everything, the noise is still there, its not that loud it doesnt take much to drown it out, it changes pitch when i change the receiver from cd to tuner it gets higher pitched

Sounds like the receiver needs a little professional loving care.

If you can live with this minor inconvenence, fine. You'll save a lot of money.

If not then you have two options. first, find a decent repair tech and take it in and ask for an estimate. If, like the other guy said, it's more than an entry level receiver I'd replace it.

Avtually, there have been a lot of improvements in the last fifteen years and this might be a good excuse to modernize/upgrade.
