A good speaker is one you like the sound of a lot :). The technology hasn't changed much for speakers in a long time (with the exception of certain tweeters perhaps), although subs and bass management have progressed quite a bit I think. I would definitely want a sub with the Klipsch but I'm not much of a Klipsch fan except perhaps their old larger speakers (Heritage line I think?).

I think it's fairly easy for a speaker to outlive any spare parts support. What were your previous speakers and how long did they last? Was it a foam surround disintegrating or a cone damaged or?
I'm replying again to this post due to a discovery I made since starting this thread. Come to find out, it was the old Scott amp that was causing the issue with the JBL speakers. I haven't hooked up the Denon yet because I don't have the cables, and I wasn't sure how to hook it up being I read I needed the TV to set it up. Anyhow, after the amp starting to randomly turn on/off (some days it didn't do it at all even when listening for hrs on end) I had about enough and grabbed an old Fisher amp out of the closet figuring just to get by with it until I get to the store tomorrow and holy crap, huge difference. Solid bass and could run it in bass boost without any dysfunction from the low end even with the 100w Fisher WFO. With the Scott amp, it would misbehave even at around 30% volume.

I had at one point, pulled the woofers out of the cabinets and everything about the drivers looks (even has that new speaker smell :D ) in like new condition. No deterioration of the spiders or cones or surrounds anywhere. It seemed odd that someone that would store these for years with the boxes they came in over them would have abused them and the cabs/grills are flawless.

At any rate, I am happy to report that I did indeed get a better deal than I started to think, on some pretty amazing sounding JBL towers. "I" certainly won't abuse them so they ought to be around for awhile longer. The Denon 3805 ought to be yet another step up to even better sound with these than the 80's vintage Fisher amp.
