Speaker Problems When Using Avia DVD

I have a Sony AV receiver that was part of a surround sound package with all speakers included. Had this set up for about 3 years now and just now have purchased the Avia test disk and checked the speakers. Everything seemed to work fine but just wanted to check to be sure.

When I do the speaker check the (LF) (C) (RF) all seem to get sound when they should but when it goes to the SR & SL it seems like both speakers come on together? The in & Out of phase checks seem to not work correctly and I'm sure all speakers are wired in phase.

I thought there was a problem with the disk so I tried the THX optimizer on a DVD that I have and the speaker checks are the same, the 2 surround speakers seem to work together.

Odd thing is when I check the speakers using the built in test tones on the AV receiver the speakers all check out correct? I'm really baffled. Am I missing something or is there a compatibility issue testing this Sony receiver?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

both rear surrounds coming on together is indicitave of a DPL, not a digital signal.

What type of interconnect(s) are you using from the DVD to the receiver? If you say red/white analog cables, there's your problem. You need to feed a digital signal from the DVD to the receiver. This is the "orange plug" or the square toslink connector on the DVD and receiver. You may need to reconfigure the receiver. I hope you still have the manual.

I have the digital coaxial cable and component video hooked up from my DVD player to the receiver. The DVD Player is a sony model DVP-NS300 and the receiver is a sony model STR-K750P.

Does it sound like my problem could be caused by a setup or wiring problem? Like I said before the speakers test correctly when using the receivers built in test.

Thanks for the quick response

Check your receiver setup.

The test tones operate independent of any source. The fact that the test tones behave like they should proves the speakers are wired fine.

Maybe someone else can offer some advice on what to look for in the Sony but it sure sounds like it's treating the processing as dolby pro logic, not discrete digital chanels like DD or DTS.

Perhaps the DVD is outputing PCM which, I believe, the DVD alayer converts to stereo. Is there a "bitstream" setting option?

Again, I'm just guessing and won't take offense if someone else cures it.

Check the menu for that DVD player by accessing it on screen and go into the audio out. It is not set properly, and only recognizes prologic, hence the mono sound, both speakers in the rear. Maybe you need to make sure it is not pcm out but the other available digital audio?

Problem solved !!! Thanks for all the help everyone. The problem was the setup in the DVD player. I guess i assumed it was set right but must have been wrong from the start. Everything seems ok now. Does anyone know if the settings will stay correct if I lose power or will they be retained in memory?
Thanks again everyone

Glad to hear it.

Normally, the settings stay in the firmware memory. Dunno if they hold for years and years sans power, but for normal apps they should be fine.
