How accurate do you think YPAO is at leveling in general? Do u think it's worth doing manually ?

Depends on the meter you use. If you're using a cell phone, probably not. If you have a calibrated SPL meter, then perhaps.

I have a RadioShack SPL METER. One of the older digital ones. I would say it's probably over 10 years old

I've never used YPAO but rather MCACC and Audyssey XT & XT32. They've all done nicely, and I do use them, and results are better than I can with the controls available...but I don't try and set levels manually, not worth it IMO even though I have an OmniMic V2 for measurements.

Ok. I just leave well enough alone. I just need to get my sub levels correct. YPAO did a great job and it sounds great. Again. It just leveled the subs too low lol

Audyssey can do that too, just bump the trim level for the sub up a few dB....

Do you have any experience with BGC. Boundry gain compensation . Now that you know I have front firing subs not rear, and I don't let YPAO eq the room, is BGC worth using ? Is it only to be used with corner loaded rear firing subs?? Thanks again

Is that a setting in the Yamaha avr? My Onkyo had such a toggle and said:

You can apply THX’s Boundary Gain Compensation
(BGC) to compensate the perceived exaggeration of low
frequencies for listeners sitting very close to a room
boundary (i.e., wall).

Since I don't have any listening positions up against a wall....I never tried it.

Yea. It's in my AVR . Just wondered what it really did?

OK, I did switch it on and off listening to music, and heard no difference. Now I cross my subs at 80 Hz Instead of 60hz. I'm just happier with the way the subs sound at 80 Hz especially streaming music. And that's probably better for my surrounds and my center Which is the RC-64ll and RS-62's. Center claims it plays down to 59hz and surrounds claim 50hz. And I did turn boundary gain off..

Good question so went looking a bit, saw this answer from Chris K (CTO of Audyssey):
"BGC is intended to compensate for the bass boost that happens when a sub is placed near walls or corners. It's a fixed correction that doesn't really know where your sub is and how far from the walls it is located. My suggestion is to leave it off and let MultEQ take care of the needed compensation."

Boundary gain doesn't really occur when the sub is front firing does it ? Are just rear firing subs affected by boundary gain?

1st front firing vs rear firing is just how you orient the sub for the most part.

2nd boundary gain has nothing to do with orientation

3rd boundary gain is more or less when the sound waves meet at a boundary (wall, floor, ceiling) and meet in phase, which means they peak at the same time causing the resulting wave to be greater than intended.

Think of it like waves in the ocean and how they rise and dip. Well if two waves meet and the are rising and dipping at the same time their rise will be twice as much and so will their dip.

Thank you. Thank you for the article, and also thank you for the explanation with the ocean. Perfect analogy. Have a great weekend guys
