I have a onkyo txsr500.The upper A and upper B speaker inputs dont work.Is the unit smoked or is there a repair I can do.I dont want to send it out as its old and I will be getting a new one.But it will make a good second receiver

Hi, Jonny.

It might be something inside the unit, but often it's something that just got reconfigured or switched off by mistake. Not trying to patronizing with the things below - just trying to cover all bases.
  • Make sure that the A and B speaker buttons are in the correct positions on the front panel (and that you see "A" and/or "B" displayed in the top left corner of the front panel display)
  • Make sure that the "mute" function isn't on (and that you do not see "MUTING" flashing in the top left corner of the front panel display)
  • Make sure that no headphones are connected

None of those apply. Its definitely something inside the unit. The lower inputs work on A and B.Im thinkin this is common issue as my old Yamaha did the same thing. Is it fixable without sending it out?If so how?

I'm not following. What lower inputs are you referring to? This is the rear panel for your receiver.

Just to clear up one of your terms- speaker connections send the signal OUT to the speakers- they're not "speaker inputs". The connectors that are round, plastic and different colors are called 'binding posts' and if you look on the back panel, they have an L or R near them. The top ones are Left Channel and the bottom ones are Right Channel.

If you hear nothing when using the tuner and you connect ONE SPEAKER to the top terminals- one red and one black, it may mean that channel has a problem. While it could be a dirty switch or control, it often means that channel needs to be repaired. If you have an iPod with a Y cord that has RCA plugs, you can connect it to test each channel and each input jack (Aux, Tape, CD, etc), individually.

I actually had a similar failure mode on a Denon receiver. Everything on the right - right front on A and B as well as right surround - stopped working one day.

Was it repairable?

So far, it sounds like your left channel died. You'll most likely need a tech to tell you why.

I opened it up and spent a while tracing circuits and playing with a voltmeter to try to determine what part had gone bad. I was hoping there was a blown cap or faulty relay or something. I finally decided after poring over the circuit board and the Denon circuit diagrams that it was one of the microchips and therefore unrepairable. I tossed it out and got a new Onkyo.

IMO, don't waste the money on trying to repair it. There are several options and we would happily give suggestions that fit your budget and needs. This is just to show you what's out there,
