Hello... I'm a new member who knows enough to know he doesn't know enough about speakers to make an educated guess on their purchase.
I am going to have a dedicated room for tv viewing in my finished attack and want to put in a decent surround system. It will be used for mostly TV and movies.
Room: 13' wide and 17' deep. Ceiling about 7'5"
TV: Sony large LCD which I think is 56" - model just below the XBR top of the line.
recvr: Kenwood VR2080 - Hope to upgrade to a Sony ES model at some point to gain the ease of use and reduction in remotes for my wife's sake. I'll try to sell the Kenwood at some point, but I have what I have now and it only has about 20 hours of use on it.
I did purchase Axiom Qs8 v2 for the rears. I got a good deal on them and they seemed to be viewed as one the top rear surrounds in the speaker world, so I didn't want to pass up the deal.
I also already have a Polk 450 psw sub from years back that I never used - 150 watt, 12" direct firing
Questions:
1. fronts: I think my room is on the borderline of a small tower or good bookshelf speaker. I need opinions as to whether a small tower or bookshelf would be a better option to fill the room.
2. I have been looking for a used set of Axiom M60, Axiom M50, or Polk LSI9's. The Axioms are apparently tough to locate and the Polks can be had on Ebay new. I am trying to find good front used to save money and then bite the bullet for a new center that matches the fronts. Is there somewhere besides Ebay and Audiogon to look for quality used speakers?u
3. Has anyone heard the HTD flat panel speaker. At $150 a peice new, they might not be up to the level of the members here - I'm not sure. I could not find any unbiased reviews. uIf they were decent speakers, I could put three across the front way under my budget.
5. OK... Looking for suggestions on the fronts that I could also look for used or new in the $400-$500 for a set. That price range is a max, so if there is a great used speaker I can score for less, that would be a great bonus. Again, almost all movie/tv listening. I'm not a name whore or loyal to any brand, but I hope to match the used speakrs with a new center $400-$450 max additional for the center. I know that this will generate a wide range of awnsers from viewing previous posts and I have prepared myself to be a little further confused on this.
The Kenwood, Polk sub, and Axioms are set pieces at this point. I'm currently funding a huge house renovation and still need pieces to even put surround sound in - let alone upgrade. I will be upgrading the Kenwood receiver, but the time frame is way open and could be a while. I do want to match the three fronts from the same company for the most ideal sound. I hear great thing of Aperion and Axiom, but they are very tough to locate used and Aperion's used still aren't really in my price range.
Quality suggestions on any of this would be appreciated - sorry it's long winded.
