A lower gauge is bigger.
It's a little shoe sizes; bigger isn't always better, it's really the size that fits the foot. Or with wire, what fits the application.

The guage you choose depends on the length of the run of wire, and also how much power you plan to push through the wire. 16 guage is enough for most applications, but it can't hurt to go with 14, and 12 would likely be the biggest you would ever need.

I think we already discussed this before in a previous thread. 14AWG should be plenty for your needs.
