I have a Yamaha RX2700 receiver which supports 7.1 surround and 140 watts per channel at 8 ohm. My speakers are Focal 5.1 setup. These are small bookshelf speakers that sounded great in the store... Once I set them up the sound weak. So I added my older JBL 405 floor speakers. These are 3 way with a 8" woofer. That really improved the sound. I love watching movies and occasionally will listen to music. My budget is open but not 2-3k plus per speaker. I doubt that I could really hear that well anyway. I also have a couple of old Bose 201's which I used once upon a time.

What I would like to have is a complete system from one manufacture that provides OK sound. From above my Focals are two way speakers and I've found then lacking. I went to Best Buy looking for more JBL's but they recently switched their speaker line. Also they mainly carry only 2 way speakers.

I hope to use the new speakers in a home theater that I plan to build one day. I am still planning but would like to get started buying the speakers soon. My listening room today is odd shaped great room with 10' ceiling, somewhere close to 20x24'. My actual listening area is closer to 15x12' .

I am selling my current house so I cannot say what the next room size will be but I hope to carve out part of a basement area about 12x15' or so. I will build it for 2-5 people.

My DLP is 65", and my signature covers the other gear... I hope to purchase a front projector once I get into a new house. I have another posting asking about remotes but that is in I hope the correct grouping (misc.).

I have looked at the Mirage line and some Polk's. There are so many different manufactures that I have never herd of. Too many choices leave me confused...

I suggest you take your time reading this, and other forums. Look for threads about speaker suggestions in your budget range. See what speakers have been recommended to others. Make a list of those speakers, and find dealers in your area to go demo yourself. Bring your own material to audition with. Stuff your familiar with. Take notes of your impressions so you don't forget. Have fun with it, and take your time.

Make sure the new speakers are all "phased" correctly. Even if the terminals and wires indicate that they are, it's possible that they're either mis-wired internally or the voice coils were reversed. It's rare but it does happen. If it's dark where the connections were made, double check- it happens to everyone at some point. Also, go through the setup menu and make sure everything is correct for what you have now. If the Yamaha did an EQ routine for the JBL, i wouldn't necessarily expect the Focals to sound the same, anyway. If they're small bookshelf speakers (5-1/4" mid-bass), the JBL sounding more full shouldn't be that surprising.

Read up on it, as mazersteven recommended.

First of all do not get hung up on three ways. Three ways are much more expensive to engineer properly. They are much more prone to problems, because you have two critical crossovers instead of one.

Your perception of a weak sound is probably due to lack of compensation for the step response of a narrow cabinet. Your dealer's show room likely had more room gain in the upper bass.

If you want I DIY project, then I recommend the SEAS Thor kit. This explains the operation of the speaker.

I would recommend you just buy the parts, and build the boxes. It is hard to get the stuffing densities correct when the enclosure is built. It will also save you money.

This speaker is a gem, and one of the best speakers available at any price.

One other issue, to apply diffraction compensation properly always involves dropping the impedance to four ohms or less at least below 400 Hz. The Thors are a pretty easy drive and I suspect your receiver will do OK as long as you don't use excessive volume.

TLS Guy and R-Carpenter - I should have stated that I want to build the HT not the speakers. My knowledge and tools are not sufficient to take on that task. As for the 3ways... well I have tried several two ways and they were always weak. I will try to follow your suggestion by keeping an open mind. I went to Best Buy and listened to every speaker they had on display. Some were OK but I didn't care for them overall. I'll keep looking!

Mazer - I have read almost all postings over the last 6-9 months and nothing stood out. I have read the 10 things not to do (good read) and many others. Also I have been looking for about a year for these speakers. Mainly over the last 3-4 months. I will continue the search.

high-figh - Thanks for the suggestions. Yes I have looked very carefully at the connections when installing them. Also the receiver detects out of phase speakers and even tells you which one. I was not too surprised at the better sounds of the JBL's because the show room has 1/2 glass walls (tweeters) and no house I've seen can pull that off!

Perkey84 - Thanks for sharing your find! I have not looked at the Kilpcsh line but I will check them out. Thanks again!

All - Some great suggestions, please keep them coming and don't forget to list what you have as well as their pro's and con's. (if you don't mind that is).

What exactly do you mean by weak? It would probably help a lot if you could describe exactly what it is you don't like about your current speakers. What is it you like about the JBLs?

Since I am replacing most not all speakers and hope to create a 7.1 system this may be a little bit off direction. But since you asked!

When I used only the Focal 5.1 system the sound was not very rich. I believe that the mid-range was struggling. When I added the JBL's into the mix the whole sound experience was enriched. Yes the base was better, but the mid-range was twice what the Focals produced.

I wish there was an easier way to describe it but that is what it sounded like to me.

Other thoughts:
Maybe the JBL's work at lower volumes better. I did use higher volumes but the sound quality was not there.
