Speaker Crossover Frequency

I have my surround sound with no subwoofer, I'm using Technics SB-CR77 3-way floorspeakers with 12" woofers as my mains, a Polk CSM center channel, and Polk M10's for my surrounds, with a Sony STR-DE698 receiver. My question is, on the receiver it has speaker crossover frequency setting that initially has a setting of 100Hz with the range of adjustment of 40Hz to 160Hz, I was wondering if you thought the initial setting is about right for my system or would you recommend a different setting. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

The crossover setting on your receiver sends all frequencies below that setting (plus some "rolloff") to the subwoofer. As you have no subwoofer, disable the setting, or set it to the highest available frequency. To have true surround, you really ought to consider in purchasing a sub. Cheers.

Can you just set your rears as "small"?

Because there is no subwoofer you want the front mains set to Large. Most receivers won't let you set it to anything but Large anyway if you indicate that no subwoofer is present. You can set all the other channels to Small and the bass below the xover will be redirected to the front speakers.

100 Hz may be a suitable xover frequency but it all depends on the frequency response of the speakers (which was not indicated). If the center and surrounds are capable down to 60 Hz or so then 80 Hz may be better.
