It's not always easy to know if the sub/main speaker transition is 'correct' or 'right', but it can be easier to hear it as 'bad'. An easier way to set the crossover frequency and phase is to download a Real Time Analyzer app for your phone. I work in AV and use the Dynaudio app, which also measures level- if you see a smooth response and transition in the crossover range, you'll know it's close or correct. I strongly recommend messing around with the settings a lot, so you can see & hear the differences in real time. You can also use the app to set up the main speakers (mark their positions before you start, so you can return them to their spot if you find that they're already where they should be) before you turn the subwoofer on- you are trying to integrate it in the existing system, after all.
