Hello all, Im a newbie here and need some help setting up my Home Theater in my new house.
We recently purchased a 65" Mitsubishi HDTV and a Yamaha RXV-650 Receiver and now are looking for a set of surround sound speakers to accent the room. We had the house pre wired for surround sound so and the room dimensions are as follows:

18' X 16' with TV sitting 15' from couch. The room also has vaulted ceilings with the TV wall being 11' and the back wall being 8'.

I currently have a Bose Acoustimass 7 and no rear speakers. We are looking to spend 700 +/- for some decent surround speakers that will do well in this room. I see that most posters on this forum say stay away from Bose, so that is why I am asking for advice. Thank you in advance

not completely sure of the goal here... do you just want back speakers or are you looking for a whole set ?

for your price range on a whole set, the best bet would probably be to put together a package consisting of AS-F2 fronts ($ 190 each) an AS-C1 center ($ 129), and the AS-R1 back speakers ($ 84 each) from Athena (total $ 677 plus shipping). this would pretty much blow away your existing toys.

try this site:

www.abesofmaine.com

there are a few places with slightly better prices, but they seem to be sold out of holiday stock. abe's has some pricey shipping (about $ 150 for the package described above) so you might want to check at shopping.com for a little better source.

no, not just for the fronts.. looking for a complete set with the subs, but I guess I could use the Bose for the fronts, but was hoping to get something better. My wife was going to buy me the AM 10 but since alot of people say dont go with Bose, I thought we would try something different.
I can spend upwards of 1000, since we were going to get the AM 10 in the first place, but was hoping to save a little money.

Thanks in advance.

you have a couple of decent options. you could finish out the Athena system with a sub, or hold that off for a couple of months and get the rest of the pieces.

a couple of other choices:

a Polk bookshelf system (RTI-6 mains @ $380 per pair, FXI-3 surrounds @ $ 350 per pair, a CSI-3 center for $ 200, total price $ 930 and get a free 10 inch powered sub with free shipping from www.Crutchfield.com and they also have 6 months no interest on the polks). I don't really know much about Polk sound quality, but someone like Polkfan could probably give you a good read on them,

you could also go with Polk Monitor 60 mains ($560), the CSI-3 center ($200), some Atrium 45's for surround ($ 200) for a $ 960 total. you'd still get the free sub and free shipping. the Atriums are indoor-outdoor, but that bracket makes them very easy to hang and the white usually blends in well with most walls.

crutchfield also has the Inifinity Alpha 50 floorstanders @ $ 600 per pair, the PS8 sub for $ 225 and the Alpha Center for $ 150, with a free set of Primus 150 surrounds for a total price of $ 975, also free shipping.

I have the 50's, the Alpha 37C center and the surrounds, with no sub. Some things to note... the Infinities will never be confused with Bose. They are heavy and they take up space. The Alpha Center is only about 12 pounds, but the 37C is almost 35, so it takes somthing solid to hold it. The same with the surrounds, which are a little over 8 pounds each, so I wouldn't use the el cheapo brackets from Walmart to hang them, and I would make darn sure I had the screws sunk into wood, not just sheet rock. you do need to give the Infinities a week or so to burn in. my 50's were downright harsh when I first plugged them in, but they loosened up and smoothed out after a little use. they sound great now.

the Bose can go back in the bedroom.

Anyone have any experience with the Pioneer Elite series? I have a chance to get 4 TZMS09, 1 TZMC09, and TZSW05 for under 1000.00. is this a decent system, or should I just get one of the other suggestions and upgrade later?

Thanks again.

check these out...

Plasma-docs is having a sale on onix rocket elt systems.

$700 5.1 elt cherry with elt sub

$950 5.1 elt with svs sub

They may be a little forward for some tastes with the yamaha, but the speakers seem to be pretty awesome.

Yes indeed, scrap the bose idea. They're convenient but...

You might also want to check out Axiom. They have complete speaker systems that should fit your bill. Just another option to consider.
