SPDIF Surround Sound Computer Speakers

I'm looking into getting a nice 5.1 set of speakers for my computer system. I'd like to have surround sound for my gaming. My laptop has a single 3.5mm stereo port but it has the ability to use optical SPDIF. I was hoping I'd be able to use the SPDIF for surround sound.

I'm looking for advice as to if this is possible and what I'd need to get it going.

I'd also appreciate any recommendations for an appropriate speaker system under $100.

The Klipsch GMX-D5.1 might be what you are looking for, and can be had for ~around $100-120 online, and has only one SPDIF optical output. This is the only thing I can think of...

If it has to be under $100, I can say with pretty good authority such a thing probably does not exist.
