My friends are in Burbank. They said they're OK but their coworkers and friends have lost their houses. My former manager is on the coast, but he is south, so no fires there currently.

Drones are being used by news crews, PG&E (electric company) and the fire crews to monitor the progress. It is not just people flying them around. That said, I am sure there are private ones out there for no reason - certainly not too bright given the possible fines. Planes and helicopters will not be able to see those drones until it is too late. Interestingly, there was a news show about fire fighting drones being shown at CES that can coordinate together to do the retardant dropping to more effectively create breaks to slow the fire's progress.

One of the news articles had a shot of some idiots going into the neighborhoods and taking selfies with peoples burning houses. Now that is just idiotic. In addition to that, some moron was running around a neighborhood with a blowtorch trying to start more fires... He was captured by residents who saw him and called the police, who arrested him. The fire in that area is believed to be started by him, but is under investigation.

The good news is, the winds will calm this weekend and the fire crews can try to catch up a bit. The BAD news is, it is expected to pick up again by Mon/Tue. Of the two major fires, one was only 3% contained and the other is still 0% even with ~130,000 fire fighters on hand.

The National Guard had to be brought in last night because police were stretched thin trying to prevent looters.

Hopefully, the drone was stuck in the wing, so the buyer/owner can be identified.
The fact that they knew it was a private drone means they will almost certainly find out who it was.

Did you see anything about the Kenneth fire being arson and they caught the guy? Neighbors subdued him.

Looks like they released him. Not enough info to charge him yet. And from the news reports that showed him, he looked homeless.

Yes we do. Me and J_garcia for sure.
We were in Chandler, AZ for the Holidays driving home. We were going to come home on Tuesday but decided to travel last Sunday coming on I-10 , I-2010, I-5, then to the coast, highway 101. Well, LA area had a terrible car accident on 134, I think, all 4 lanes blocked off. Idiot drove down an exit off ramps and yes, a huge collision, 2 dead, at least 3 injured.
Should have driven inland a bit to bypass that 210 that we started doing now for a number if trips.

We have big fires in OZ, which in most cases are under control in a matter of days. I think your problem is most of the houses are close together, and there is little to no room for separation, so fires simply jump from house to house.

We get limited news reports here, but from what I gather in some cases you simply ran out of water, at the hydrant points. This s unforgivable, and who ever is responsible needs locking up. Some report say it is down to budget cuts.

As for the complete distraction of homes in road after road. Fire has no respect, for people or what there wealth and importance might be. And from what's reported it will take years to replace and rebuild. That's if the insurance companies, ever pay out all the claims, before they go bankrupt. Mega millions are involved .

As for people deliberately starting fires, When caught they need a couple of weeks in intensive care to cure there problem.

First and foremost, thoughts and prayers for all those suffering right now. Hopefully the corrections are made so as to minimize this in the future. While there will be plenty of blame to go around It just drives me nuts to see this level of stupidity.........

The CL-415 is a remarkable aircraft. Has a payload approaching that of a B-17 (6,000 litres) and can take on that load in 12 seconds of skimming the surface of the water.

The succeeding model, CL-515, will have a capacity of 7,000 litres.

I doubt that you have anything like the 'Santa Ana' winds though. There will be plenty of finger pointing and blame to go around, that's for sure
