Could I use an old (cheap) receiver to start measuring room acoustics and multilple sub placement with minidsp before i get my new receiver? Should I wait?

I don’t see any reason to wait. If you manage to come up with something you like, you could just hook up the miniDSP “as is” when you get the permanent AVR, and be ready to go. Except perpahs for overall gain adjustments.
