Sony VPL VW675ES Auto-calibration Question

I installed a new lamp in my 675ES over the weekend and did an 'auto calibration'. My projector is ceiling mounted, so I'm using lens shift to position the image on screen.
When it does the auto calibration routine, it shifts the lens back to projector center and zooms it to a small area. Because it's ceiling mounted, the test patterns are only half on the screen, 1/4 on the curtains above the screen and 1/4 on the ceiling.
I let it finish calibration and the picture looks okay, but I'm wondering if it matters what the projector is targeting, say, if the calibration is internal, or if it does matter because there is a light sensor/camera in the projector that's reading back the illumination from the screen?
