I just bought a Sony STR-DH500 receiver because my other receiver died on me. Anyways. I got it all hooked up and I run the test on the speakers and they all work fine. I am having trouble with connecting my xbox 360 though. I tried to hook my 360 up directly to the receiver with component cables and then HDMI from the receiver to my projector but the video will not work. SO I hooked the video directly to the projector and I have an optical digital cable connected from the xbox to the receiver and only my front 2 and center speakers work. The back to speakers and sub have no sound when I am using my Xbox. Is there something I am doing wrong? Thanks

Hi thawk21,

You gonna have to sit down, and read your manual for your Sony receiver, as well set your TV properly (quite simple for that one).
And your xbox 360 does also have to be setup properly.

You have to go into the audio and video setup menus and adjust the parameters accordingly, so the audio and video signals are output with their respective orders.
Just take your time, and proceeds one step at a time, it's worth it. :)

Cheers,

Bob

I have read all the manuals and everything seems like it hooked up right to me. I still don't know what is going on.

Hi. I looked briefly at the manual for the receiver last night and didn't see a diagram for how video is handled. I'll look more at it this morning. The first thing that came to mind for me was that your receiver won't convert component video to HDMI, but I'll check on that.

As for the audio issue when you connect the Xbox using an optical audio cable, I have some questions:
  1. What surround sound mode were you using?
  2. What surround sound audio source were you using?
  3. Do you have the front and center channels set to "SMALL" or "LARGE"?
  4. Do you know if you need to change the Xbox audio output to bitstream?
It's possible that the audio connection from the Xbox was fine, but that the receiver settings and/or audio source resulted in you only hearing audio from the front three speakers.

Adam, did you find out if this machine allows component (my Wii) to be send over hdmi? That would be really nice, and will convince me to buy this system probably. Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the forum!

I just took another look into it, and that Sony receiver only has HDMI video switching (pass-through only with no processing of the signal). So, no - I don't believe that it will convert any video signals for output from the HDMI output.
