Read about it after it was hooked up that way. So it should work using the surround terminals. These are 8ohm speakers I believe .

Yes, the surround terminals will be better as they have their own amps, rather than doubling up on the L/R channels due impedance concerns, and in mono or multi-ch stereo modes will have the same content anyways.

Thanks worked out great. Now could I upgrade to the Sony 7.2 avr that has 2 zones and run the other 2 speakers totalling 6 ?

The 7 channels of amp would allow up to 7 speakers. More if you add an external amp on the zone 2 preouts....(but may not play nicely all in one zone...could be slight change in timing, not sure).
