Hi,

I've just purchased a Sony STR-DG820 amp with the excitement of linking it up to my PS3 but whatever I do I can't seem to get any sound to come out of the amp. I've tried many different cable configurations and played with the menu set ups of the PS3 and the amp but 4 hours or trying I am still having no luck.
I'm linking this up with a Samsung 42" plasma (PS42A457P1D)
Please help??

Plug your hdmi cable into your Receiver spot designated for dvd(you may need to configure the input/outputs. Plug another hdmi cable into your tv from your receiver.

If you are still lost make sure to consult your user manual for the receiver and for the PS3.

Welcome to the forum!

Just to help me understand the situation - are you getting no sound from the amp at all (for any input), or are you just getting no sound when you try to listen to the PS3?

Thanks for responding.
I've managed to get the sound working but I don't think this is the best set up for the equipment. I've linked the ps3 to the amp with hdmi, the amp (output) to the tv with hdmi, and then I have an optical from the ps3 to the amp and another optical from the tv output to the amp. As long as I have the amp set to tv I get sound from dvd's & games now but shouldn't I be using the dvd settings option on the amp? And wouldn't this affect the sound performance give the ps3 audio source is having to go through the tv to get to the amp?
I've tried linking the ps3 directly to the amp with hdmi and then a hdmi from the amp to the tv but couldn't get this to work? Wouldn't even get visuals with this set up?

I'm downloading the owner's manual for your receiver right now. The download is hanging up for some reason, so I wanted to post and let you know that I'm working on it.

Okay, finally got the manual.

Your receiver will handle Dolby Digital, DTS, and Linear PCM over the HDMI inputs. So, if you are trying to listen to a lossless codec (such as Dolby TrueHD) from the PS3, you need to set the PS3 to output LPCM and not bitstream over HDMI. Your receiver can't decode (and thus, won't make sound) the bitstreamed lossless codecs.

Make sure that you are selecting the input on the receiver that corresponds to the HDMI input jack to which you connected the PS3 (e.g. "BD" is the input for the "BD IN" jack).

Don't connect the optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver. Only connect the HDMI cable for now. I don't know if the optical cable would override the HDMI input or not (I need to keep looking in the manual).

The optical cable will not override the hdmi unless you tell it too. You can always reset your PS3 and then let it do an auto setup for your hdmi. Usually that get's the job done. I forget the think to do to make it automatically use hdmi.

Thanks it's done the trick. Works a treat!!

A couple of other things... with this amp can I link it to a record player (yes I know it's a bit dated..) so I can still listen to my old vynal? My previous amp had specific phono inputs but this new one doesn't. But can I link it to another input? I also have a wii and receive audio via the tv. Are there any better setups directly to the amp or is the sound quality benefit not worthwhile?

Since you used to use the phono input on your previous amp, I'm going to assume that your turntable does not have a built-in preamp. Therefore, in order to use a non-phono input on your new receiver, you'll need to get a separate phono preamp. There are several available, with this one being just one example. You can search the forum for more ideas, or wait for one of the vinyl folks to chime in. They know more about that stuff than I do.

Were you able to get the turntable connected? I have this receiver now and a line level output turntable (i.e. it's pre-amped), but can't get the receiver to play it in any port. If you were able to get it working, can you tell me how? Thanks!
