Sony receiver overload problem - help requested

Hi All,

I have a Sony AV receiver model str-de598, that goes into "Protect" mode and shuts itself off when the volume gets to a certain point if something is connected to video 2 or video 3.

It isn't a loudness problem. I have my sound card connected to video 2 and just turning the volume up to a comfortable listening level sends it into overlad.

I hooked my daughters Playstation to video 3 and it shut itself off before you could even hear it good.

Any ideas what the problem might be? The manual doesn't offer any suggestions.

Many thanks,
Thomas

Try this simple test to determine whether you have a couple of sets of bad inputs on Video 2 and Video 3, or a mismatch of voltabe/impedance on the equipment your are trying to connect to your receiver.

Take a source you know to work well... possibly your CD or DVD player... and connect the audio into the Video 2 audio inputs. If the volume is normal and you can play the source sound at reasonable levels, then the inputs on your receiver are okay, and it's most likely a mismatch with the PC soundcard and Playstation audio output.

What speakers are your trying to drive with it? Protect is frequently 1 of 2 things - either you are trying to drive speakers with too low of an impedance or you have a short in one of the speaker wires.
