Sony Flagship DVP-S7000 DVD player.

I just put some money down on this player at (you just guess where).....

Anyway, it looks like a solid machine, and it received much praise during its time. It should stack up to the Toshiba SD-9000 I would hope, but I don't expect it will leap bounds in performance over my current player. (I like these old players because of their stellar ability to produce near perfect black levels and the simplicity of the machine). I can take an otherwise flawless 480i signal and send it through a video processor (not necessary at this point as my TV is SD, but who knows what the future holds.;)).

I don't have a comparison chart for the Toshiba/Sony players since there is little to be found on the Toshiba SD-9000. I would definitely like to hear from someone who has experience using both players.:D

The price is $50 by the way, I have put $5 down, because I am a broke bastard.:(

I remember looking at that when it first came out. A fine, fine looking machine. The moving front panel is just cool...it was then, it is now. It was a little too pricey for me back then, so I went with a Toshiba second-gen player a few months later. So, sorry, I don't have experience with it. Your picture just brought back some memories.

Glad I posted the picture, because many people have seen it. People don't generally associate model numbers like I do. I see some model numbers and go, "Oh, that thing". I remember things like that, unimportant things.:(

I still have that player. Dropped 1100 for it. I am getting the OPPO 981 in a couple of days. I feel this Sony was the best player for its time. Sometimes it won't play certain dvd's.

Is it worth $50?

My two cents? Yeah, if only for the cool mechanical front panel (I'm an ME, so I like that stuff). Performance-wise, my guess is that any decent modern player will blow it away. Admittedly I'm speaking out of ignorance here, but I'd be surprised if it could do DTS. My second-gen player couldn't. The video DAC in that thing was great 10 years ago, but it's nothing special now.

I still have this unit in my upstairs theater. Video wise it will still blow away most DVD players under $500 (IMO). The major difference between this unit and any new unit is the DTS format. Great machine and definately worth the $50 if you don't care about DTS.

I can honestly say DTS does not concern me. I don't really consider Dolby Digital or DTS to be superior over the other. It is all in how it is implemented.;)

I was thinking on the same lines about video, it should at the very least be on par with the Toshiba SD-9000.

Actually when I saw the model number in the thread title, I thought, "I remember that player!" I looked long and hard at it back then, but ended up buying three $450 Pioneer players w/ DTS support instead so I could give one to my father and godfather (and of course the 3rd one was for me!), but that Sony was a reference DVD player in it's day. Prices started dropping big time on players right around then like from mostly $700-800 to starting at $450, so I was gun shy at dropping $1200 on one player that I thought would be much cheaper in a month or two. I'd probably just get a $70 HDMI up-converting player, but I have a number of DTS DVD's. If you don't care about DTS or HDMI, then it'd be cool to finally have that player that was so huge in it's day sure.

If you get it, post some good pics of the front & back of the unit, wanna see if they are still the same as I remember them in my head!!! :D

Oh, I always take detailed pictures of my equipment purchases, point in case in my signature for the Teac Executive micro-system. It hyperlinked all the good pictures so they wouldn't hog up the review.;):D

I could care less about HDMI, I am still SD. I had a Samsung up-converting player once and my Toshiba SD-9000 looked better on my 480i display, and the Toshiba didn't F**k up all the time.

Nice find!

Hi Seth,
that's a nice machine, definitely worth $50.
It was the reference standard, in it's day.
It's real good for audio too.
I have the predecessor to that model, the DVP-S7700, they look the same.
Nice find, Good Luck with it.

I think the DVP-S7700 is the succesor to the DVP-S7000, the DVP-S7700 has DTS support correct?

Opps, I wrote predecessor. My bad.
You are correct sir.
I did mean all the other stuff I said though;)
Don't forget to try listening to cd's through your S7000. Nice audio too

It is a good player, solidly built and good stuff overall. A friend has one he wants to sell me, but 480i and no DTS were the killers for me. It is a good interlaced player for sure, but a $120 Oppo will run circles around it unfortunately, and have SACD, DVD-A.

I got the player today, it is quite nice.

After playing with for a while I think it is pretty much the same as the Toshiba, although looking at the two they couldn't be anymore different. The Sony looks to be built to "not break,.....ever". It has a very strange power supply and a massive logic board, and a nice output board as well. I will be posting pictures for everyone as soon as the batteries for my camera are charged.:)

Logic decoder board looks like the size of the new BR decoders..... big.

At least it looks pretty :D
