I am inches from picking up a Sony SXRD 55" from a authorized Sony outlet store near where I live. . It is refurbished but still has a factory warranty. So tell me what I am benefiting from with 1080p verses my Vega 50" 768 native resolution TV.

Blu-Ray, PS3, what else. How will this benefit HD broadcasts that are 720p/1080i?

Great for Blu-Ray DVDs and 1080p games that are coming. No big deal on
780p TV.

It could potentially look worse for 720p tv due to needing to scale the signal - I doubt that will be a problem though, but I don't know how good the scalers that sony uses are (never seen them in person). Its unlikely, but possible. It will be great for 1080p content from hd dvds/blu-ray and 1080p broadcasts in the future.

I haven't looked into what models have this problem, but I have heard of some of the sxrd sets (i'm assuming the earlier ones) developing a green haze or blob on the screen...again, haven't seen it, just something I've heard that you might want to look into

The only concern I have with Sony SXRD is the green blob. I work for a service center and in the past week we have picked up three SXRD's with that issue.

what is this blob issue you speak of?

The "green blob" is just that, a yellow-green haze that spreads across part or all of the screen that gets worse over time. Fixing it requires light engine replacement. It is well documented at AVS forum but their site seems to be down at the moment.

Well I went off the facts and decided against the Sony (mainly green blob). And I started looking for Demo models at local stores. I settled on a 52" Mits 1080p DLP model WD52628. I researched and couldn't find anything bad on this set. So I bought it and got a hell of a deal too. but here's the issue I have now

I am blown away buy the amount of digital/macro blocking I see on moving frames and flashing images on HD broadcasts. DVD seem to be fine, but not TV. Is there something I can do. I had to convince the little lady that it was time to upgrade, but now I am starting to regret it. And over all I feel the picture (after months of tweeking) was better on the Sony.

I really hate to be the bearer of bad news but I cannot recommend the Mitsubishi 628 or 525 series sets. Their designers seem to have taken a vacation and left the design up to some monkeys. I have seen more problems with those TV's than I ever thought possible. The mechanical parts are fine, the electronic parts fail in the strangest ways. I haven't seen problems with any Mits RPTV's from before or after the 628 or 525 models. They were simply lemon sets in my opinion.

The warning of the green blob was not meant to scare you away from the SXRD. It is something to be on the lookout for. I totally agree that the SXRD has a better picture than the Mits 628. Not all SXRD sets are bad and as long as you have a warranty you should be fine. I would go for an extended warranty if you can.

Sorry you're having problems with your DLP. I just bought my 50" SXRD A2000 set, and I was pretty apprehensive about the green blob problem. I think I read on avs that roughly ten percent of the people there who had an SXRD set experienced the green blob. Ten percent is enough to make me pretty reluctant, but I set it up last night, did the calibration, and no green blob to speak of. In fact, the picture is fantastic.

cheers,

I saw the same TV you speak of at the store. I am a little confused at which is which. I want the model without the side speakers. Then there is one with them, they almost look like huge handles on the side have a small space between them and the set.

I might give it a few more days of tweaking and if I feel i took a step backwards then I'll return it and go with the Sony. Only problem is I picked it up on my own and live on the second floor. I had to barrow a friend for a few hours to pick it up and get it in my house. Bummer!

The one I'm talking about is the A2000, which has the speakers at the bottom of the set. It's the XBR series -- the first one, I think -- that has the silly dumbo ears/speakers. They've got gorgeous picture quality, though.

Best of luck moving your set if you find you do have to return it! I know with mine -- both my set and the accompanying stand, were way lighter than I thought they'd be. Still takes two people to move it cos it's so big, but still way light.

cheers,

The Mits 525/628 sets are very heavy for DLP. They are built like tanks. Much of the weight comes from the air duct inside which is solid cast iron. I move them around a lot.
