I have a trusty old Technics DVD-A player that I've used for many years. I like it in every way, but it lacks progressive scan. I also have a cheap Samsung DVD player that I bought because it has slots for memory cards to view photos on. This player does have progressive scan. Both players are connected to a Sony rear projection LCD HDTV. I don't see a difference between the two players. Is there something I'm just not looking for when comparing the picture quality of these two players?

Also understand, your LCD must deinterlace and scale the DVD video to fit onto the screen. Sony is not known for doing a phenomenal job with this, though it typically looks good - it could look better.

Samsung, likewise, is not known for phenomenal deinterlacing.

So, once you know the DVD image must be deinerlaced at some point, the question becomes "What does the best job deinterlacing the DVD video?"

That is a tough question to answer without sitting in front of both players with your display for several hours and running good test DVDs through it.
